💜 After watching the State of the Union SOTEU 2026 with Volt, a question may arise…

How do EU institutions actually work? There is an executive power held by the European Commission, but it also holds legislative power. So when we vote in the European Parliament, how much influence do the lawmakers actually have? And most importantly, why are there two Councils with very similar names?

🏛️ The European Parliament is the primary institution where EU citizens directly choose the members, once every five years. It approves and discusses laws proposed by the Commission that then go to the Council of the EU, also called the Council of Ministers, for final approval. The Commission in turn acts as the executive institution of the EU.

👨‍⚖️ The European Council and the Council of the EU, while having similar names, fulfil very different purposes. The former sets the direction of the EU through regular summits and 5-year plans and is composed of the EU's heads of state. The latter is made up of the ministers of each country, either for Foreign Affairs or Economic affairs, depending on the task at hand.

What about all the others, like the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central Bank, or the Court of Auditors? Read more about all of them in our news article https://voltbelgium.org/news/eu-politics-the-main-institutions-and-agencies

Almost 3,000 people died from the heat in Belgium this summer. Up to €6 billion in damage, harvests lost, 3,300 hectares of the High Fens burnt. 🔥

This wasn't an exceptional summer. It's what climate change looks like here and now, and it will get worse as long as we keep depending on fossil fuels we can no longer afford, for the climate or for our wallets.

We read the government agreement so you don't have to, and we don't see the ambition this moment calls for.

What we need are real measures: electrify our homes, transport, and industry; invest in wind, solar and storage; keep our nuclear plants running, and prepare our towns, farms and nature for more heat, drought and floods.

That means choosing long-term solutions over short-term electoral wins, with real accountability and policies built together with experts and citizens.

💜💬 Volt celebrates the European day of Languages!🥳

The European Day of Languages is celebrated each year today, on 26 September. It was proclaimed by the Council of Europe on 6 December 2001, as the European Year of Languages initiated by the European Commission earlier that same year was a success.

The idea of a general promotion of languages in Europe began in 1997, at the conference on language learning for a new Europe. Initially, the purpose was to persuade citizens of the importance of learning more languages. At the same time, the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR) and the concept of plurilingualism were also launched.

Nowadays, its purpose is to celebrate the diversity of linguistic heritage in Europe and to encourage lifelong learning. The European Union has 24 official languages, and we value each one of them in their beauty and individuality. We thank the translators and interpreters of EU institutions for helping us find a common understanding 🤝

Volt promotes linguistic diversity in Europe, and through our diversity we stand united! 🇪🇺

🇪🇺 Europe has its own State of the Union. Watch it with Volt's co-presidents 💜

The State of the Union probably rings a bell in the context of US politics, but it’s also one of the most important speeches in EU politics. Every September since 2010, the President of the European Commission has addressed the European Parliament during a plenary session in Strasbourg.

While being inspired by the one taking place in Washington DC, the SOTEU is a non-legally binding event organised as an agreement between the Commission and Parliament. It’s meant to reflect on the responsibility of the Commission as the executive body before the Parliament. It is also one of the best occasions for the European Parliament to hold the Commission accountable, directly criticise it, or send a signal.

🗣️ How it works
The plenary on the 16th opens with a short speech by the European Parliament’s president, Roberta Metsola, and is followed up by the European Commission’s president, Ursula von der Leyen. The speech can last up to an hour. The speech’s exact content is hard to pin down in advance, as it’s open to changes until the very last hours. Nevertheless, we expect competitiveness, defence (help for Ukraine, coordinated defence spending, etc.) and migration policies to be addressed in this year’s edition.

The speech is followed by reactions and criticism from leaders of political groups, a representative of the Council of the European Union Presidency and, lastly, individual MEPs.

💜 At Volt, we want to go further: an EU government elected by and fully accountable to Parliament, and a Parliament that can propose laws itself.

📺 You can watch it live on September 16, at 9:00 CEST, or rewatch it at 19:30 with live commentary by Volt Europa’s co-presidents via the links below.

🇸🇪 Help Volt reach the European Union Political Party status 💜

To achieve the EUPP status, we require four more seats, either regionally, nationally, or in Europe, in four different countries.

Our next opportunity arrives through the National and Regional Swedish elections. We encourage every Swedish citizen living anywhere in the world to vote in the General Elections on September 13!

On Swedish territory, you can vote up to 13 September in any location.
All the instructions regarding voting abroad can be found here: https://www.val.se/english/how-to-vote/early-voting/voting-early-as-a-swedish-citizen-living-abroad.

Since the Tido Agreement in 2022, the Swedish government has started to increasingly collaborate with the far-right political party, Swedish Democrats (SD), introducing a tough-on-crime attitude, proposing to cut the age of criminal responsibility to 14, and adopting anti-immigration rhetoric.

Help Sweden fight the far-right wave, preserve a human rights oriented society, and choose Europe instead of short-sighted nationalism and Euroscepticism.

🗳️ Volt: the only party with weekly elections 💜

🇩🇪 Decide Germany’s future, now

After AfD’s expansion of influence from states like Saxony and Brandenburg in 2024, their percentage points have increased in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate in March 2026 to almost 20%.

This points to a clear mainstreamisation of the far-right party. The elections on 6 September in Sachsen-Anhalt, on 13 September in Niedersachsen at the local level, and on 20 September in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and in the Berlin state are fundamental for deciding Germany’s future for the next few years: European integration or increased isolation?

Other than Germany? Sweden and Czechia are just around the corner!
At Volt Europa, there are elections somewhere every week, so follow us for more updates!

💜Volt welcomes Iceland to the EU 🗳️

Tomorrow, the Icelandic referendum will be held to decide whether to restart the negotiations for joining the EU from, reopening the closed chapters in 2013.

On 17 July 2009, Iceland’s application for EU membership was submitted to the Council of the European Union and on February 24, 2010, the Commission delivered positive advice and recommended the opening of negotiations for EU accession, which officially started in June of the same year.

In 2013, due to a change in government, from a social-democratic party to a centre-right alliance whose focus lay in fear of losing fishing rights, accession talks were interrupted. Following the recent geopolitical developments, Iceland decided to reopen the talks in May 2026.

Volt encourages Icelanders to vote European and secure a strong and safe future together! 💪

26/08/2026

In a few weeks, the region of Saxony-Anhalt is electing its new regional parliament alongside Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin. One thing seems clear from looking at the polls: moderate parties have failed the population. They seem to no longer provide answers to the issues citizens care about.

We currently see national politics reaching its limits. Not only in Germany. In a fast-changing world, we have to choose between integration or isolation. But while your household populist parties push for fear and isolation, moderate parties cling to their power, trying to maintain the status quo instead of providing a vision and concrete steps towards more integration.

What could they propose instead?
- An integrated and accessible healthcare system that attracts foreign staff to fill the gaps – especially in rural areas
- A vision and concrete steps to transition our economy and industries to the 21st century – a real European single market, a discussion on lessons learned from the unification and a real perspective for a region in the heart of Europe
- An educational system that teaches flexibility and allows mobility, because keeping a job for your whole life in one place is no longer possible anywhere

All of these require understanding Saxony-Anhalt as a region in Europe, not just in Germany. It requires parties that listen to the preoccupations of citizens while seeking solutions that look beyond the region’s and Germany’s borders. It requires real European parties.

We’re living in turbulent times, and parties running in these elections should be honest that there are no easy solutions. If isolation is perceived as an alternative, so can integration. Volt is the alternative as the first true European party, one that could provide new impulses and a voice in the regional council that Saxony-Anhalt so desperately needs.
