Today, 349 Squadron honoured the courage and sacrifice of those who fought to stop the German advance in May 1940.
Together with 4 Eurofighter Typhoons from the UK’s RAF 12th Squadron, we performed a commemorative FlyBy over the Albert Canal bridge in Vroenhoven.
This annual ceremony remembers the heroic aircrews of RAF No. 12 Squadron and the Belgian 5th Squadron, who on 11 and 12 May 1940 launched daring air attacks against the canal bridges at Kanne, Vroenhoven and Veltwezelt. After German paratroopers captured the bridges and fortress of Eben-Emael in a surprise assault on 10 May, it fell to these brave airmen to try to halt the enemy advance.
We honour their memory. We remember their sacrifice.
