Recent reports have highlighted promising advancements in energy storage following research in molecular solar thermal energy led by chemistry professor Grace Han. The breakthrough could eventually support new ways to store and release heat for applications such as warming buildings or protecting temperature-sensitive technologies including satellites and aircraft systems.
This work is important because it shows the possibilities for energy diversification. As renewable energy sources likes solar become more
integrated into the electricity system, reliable storage technologies are increasingly needed to help balance supply and demand, improve grid
resilience, and support energy security when sunlight or wind availability changes.
The Regulatory Authority’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) framework recognises that energy storage will play an important role in Bermuda’s
long-term energy transition. While technologies such as battery storage are more commonly discussed today, emerging innovations in thermal and molecular energy storage demonstrate how the global energy sector continues exploring new ways to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and
improve sustainability.

A 'QR Code' which stands for quick response is a type of barcode that can be read easily by a digital device and which stores
information as a series of pixels in a square-shaped grid. Recently, some fraudsters have placed QR codes inconspicuously,
intending to steal innocent users' information and financial resources. This scam called "Quishing" is a form of phishing. It's
easy for attackers to alter a QR code to point to an alternative resource without being detected. While many people are
aware that QR codes can open a URL, they can be less aware of the other actions that QR codes can initiate on a user’s
device.
While most QR codes are safe to use, it's important to be aware of the risks of fraudulent QR codes and the steps you can take
to avoid them. The Regulatory Authority (RA), through its role in overseeing electronic communications, supports a secure and reliable
communications environment and encourages public awareness around emerging digital risks such as online scams.
Here's a few ways to avoid falling victim to phishing:
Inspect Before You Scan: Check if the code is a sticker placed over a physical sign.
Check the URL: Before clicking a link that appears after scanning, carefully check that the URL is legitimate ( look for subtle misspellings).
Avoid Random Emails: Do not scan codes sent in unexpected emails or text messages.
Use Trusted Apps: If paying, use the official, reputable app rather than a site linked from a QR code

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to grow there is discussion around legislation and regulation
over the technology. While Bermuda has not introduced standalone AI legislation to date, awareness around
responsible AI use continues to grow across both the public and private sectors.
The Regulatory Authority of Bermuda does not regulate artificial intelligence directly. However, electronic
communications networks and digital infrastructure play an important role in enabling manyAI-powered services
and applications used today.

In Bermuda, the RA serves a different role from the Government.
While the Government creates policies and laws, the RA independently oversees and regulates sectors such as electricity, electronic communications, and submarine cables. The RA's work is guided by legislation, technical analysis, and evidence-based assessments, supporting fair, reliable, and effective services for Bermuda. You've probably seen them on buildings around the island, compact metal structures quietly working behind the scenes to deliver high-speed, low-latency wireless service. Here's what they actually do:
📡 Transmission: Antennas and transceivers emit radio signals, connecting to devices and enabling data exchange.
🌐 Fibre Connection: Small cells connect to the main network via high-speed fibre-optic cables.
⚡ Edge Computing: 5G networks often process data closer to the user, reducing response times and improving performance.

The future of AI is not only a technology conversation. It is also a conversation about people, policy, and society.
The UK government has said it will monitor the impact of AI and act quickly as the economy changes. Some tech founders suggest that taxation could deter companies from replacing workers, and so far, the shift has been subtle, with companies hiring fewer new staff rather than cutting existing jobs.
For small island jurisdictions and digital economies, the conversation around responsible AI governance is becoming increasingly important. The RA does not regulate artificial intelligence, but does license internet service providers and issue type approvals for technology devices.

Apple is rolling out changes for iPhone and iPad users in the UK, such as verifying age before allowing 18+ apps to be downloaded. While these changes are not enforced locally by the RA, certain safety measures should be noted to safeguard children online. In 2025, OfCom added new rules to the Online Safety Act. These rules forced large tech companies to strengthen child safety protections.
The RA continues to monitor global developments across the digital landscape, recognising their relevance to Bermuda’s electronic communications environment. Promoting awareness and informed use of technology remains an important part of supporting a safe and resilient digital community.

During the warmer months, increased use of appliances such as air conditioning can sometimes contribute to higher electricity bills. The RA encourages the community to become familiar with the energy usage tracking features available online through their BELCO account. By monitoring electricity consumption more closely, consumers can make informed decisions about their energy use and better manage household costs.

Wishing our consumers, stakeholders, and service providers a
Bermuda day of celebration. As you tune in to race updates on the radio
or watch the parade from home, it’s a great reminder of how important
reliable electricity and connectivity are to our everyday lives.
Effective regulation helps keep Bermuda connected—today and every
day.

Recent global reports are raising concerns about the security of subsea cables—the hidden networks
that carry over 95–99% of the world’s data.
While Bermuda has not faced any known threats, other countries have. For example, the United
Kingdom has reported concerns about foreign activity near its cables.
As attention grows globally, strong monitoring and international cooperation will be key to keeping
these vital connections safe and reliable.
