HAPPY 30TH CHARTER DAY TO THE NASSAU, BAHAMAS PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL

Thirty years ago, on Saturday, February 4, 1995, as a young 27-year-old, I stood with anticipation and pride, awaiting the historic moment when the Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council would be officially chartered. This was more than just an event; it was the birth of the first international council of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC).

The significance of that day was amplified by the presence of esteemed guests, including NPHC National Executive Director Dr. Michael V.W. Gordon and his wife, Thurmon, who traveled to the Bahamas for this momentous occasion. We were honored to have Frater Calvin Johnson (Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.), then Parliamentary Secretary, Office of The Deputy Prime Minister, representing the Government. Distinguished Bahamian guests, including Senator Sidney Collie, also joined us in witnessing history.

Dr. Gordon presided over the chartering ceremony, and among our special international guests were His Excellency Sidney Williams, U.S. Ambassador to The Bahamas, and his wife, U.S. Congresswoman Maxine Waters. Their presence underscored the global recognition of this landmark achievement.

Since that day in 1995, the Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council has flourished, expanding its reach, impact, and contributions to Greek life and the Bahamian community. Today, we pay tribute to the visionary leadership of Fraters William "Bill" Wallace, Peter Turnquest, and Vaughn Culmer, who laid the foundation before our chartering. We also acknowledge every leader who has since built upon their legacy, carrying the Council forward with unwavering dedication and purpose.

We also salute the Chapter Presidents who signed the NPHC Charter Application, ensuring that the Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council would become a chartered council:
• Aluchifer Rolle - Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
• Lisa Major - Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
• Dr. Carolynn Hall-Knowles - Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
• Brian Albury - Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
• Eugene "Geno" Nairn - Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
• Garnell Rolle - Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
• Phenton Neymour - Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Additionally, we recognize the dedication of the Chartering Committee, led by Charles Wildgoose, Chairman, and Distinguished Charter Secretary Sharon Poitier, Co-Chair, for their hard work in bringing this vision to life.

We have indeed come a LONG way, and while we celebrate our past, we remain steadfast in our commitment to the future. There is still work to be done, and we embrace the journey ahead with pride and determination, honoring the traditions and values of our predecessors.

Wishing continued success to the Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council!

HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF SOROR GARNELL ROLLE

The President and Members of the Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council extend heartfelt condolences to the family of Soror Garnell Rolle, as well as to the President and Sorors of the Theta Epsilon Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. on the passing of their esteemed Past President.

A dedicated servant leader and a distinguished educator, Soror Garnell’s Zeta journey began at Florida Memorial College (now Florida Memorial University) as a member of the Iota Alpha Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. While there, she distinguished herself by being crowned Miss Pan-Hellenic Council during homecoming and later achieved the prestigious title of Southern Region Soror of the Year for the National Pan-Hellenic Council (1999–2000)—becoming only the second Bahamian to receive this honor.

Soror Garnell’s legacy within the Theta Epsilon Zeta Chapter is profound. She led as Chapter President for three non-consecutive terms (1982–1984, 1986–1988, 1994–1996), guiding the chapter with vision and dedication. In January 2020, she was honored with the Distinguished Past President Award, a testament to her unwavering commitment to the Sorority’s growth and impact.

Beyond her chapter, Soror Garnell played a pivotal role in the chartering of the Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council, signing the application on behalf of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. in November 1994. In 2023, her lifetime of dedication was recognized when she was inducted into the Golden Greek Legacy Circle, celebrating over 50 years of service to Zeta.

The Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council mourns the loss of a remarkable leader and sister in Greekdom. We extend our deepest sympathies to her beloved daughter, Kijana Rolle, and the members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

May her soul rest in peace and rise in glory.
