FOCUS: YOU PROBABLY WON'T READ THIS
I has been a long while since I wrote anything here but I have not forgotten about it. Today I was amazed by the lack of focus we have in our everyday lives. We seem unable to commit to one thing or to take time out to help others. And yet we have all the time in the world for distractions. I do not say this patronizingly. Working in a library has shown me this very well. Many people come here to use our computers and see our plenitude of books. They want to read them but they just do not have the time. Maybe its because for us young people there is so much to do in so little time. Maybe its because we feel we have to use our free time unwinding because of the stress of what we did with the rest of our time.
Recently I came across a study that concluded that kids who learn how to focus on the future rather than the present's distraction do better in career, happiness, and relationships. Just google Marshmallow Test to see it for yourself.
I think libraries have an important role in helping develop this aptitude toward focus we obviously cannot take kids out of school and make them come to libraries. We cannot accommodate all the kids we would like to foster this attitude in. We cannot ask them give up what little free time they have to be kids and make them sit quietly. But maybe we came appeal to a few kids who can use some time away from the hustle and bustle and distractions of the world around them and show them why it is important for them and pleasurable for them to sit and stay and FOCUS.
You actually read the whole thing? Wow, you might just be able to focus.

Had a discussion in the library today. Do poor people have more children than they should. People seem to believe they do. I endured the conversation because I wanted to hear what some people think "poor people" are and what it is they do.

We here at the Lillian Coakley Library would like to welcome Ms. Bethel and Ms. Fernander to our LLoaH. We're not short-staffed anymore. A lot of new things are in store for the coming weeks stay tuned.
Also, read a book of Emily Dickinson poetry, I encourage everyone to look that up online and give it a try.

Pretty good book. I didn't know it was mandatory reading for government high-school until I got caught reading it at work by two high-schoolers, lol. They told me they didn't read it despite the fact they like to read. I don't think our literature classes are doing a good job of encouraging our kids to read.
