Don't rush into permanent repairs before your insurance company has had an opportunity to inspect the damage and assess your claim. Taking action too quickly could complicate the claims process. Keep damaged items and document all repairs to help support your claim.

Storm recovery is a marathon, not a sprint. Taking a little extra time to verify who you're hiring can help protect your home, your finances, and your peace of mind.

It's not just about what your policy pays, it's also about what you pay.

Many homeowners know they have insurance coverage, but far fewer know their deductible. A deductible is the amount you are responsible for paying before your insurance coverage applies to a covered loss. Understanding this number before a hurricane strikes can help you avoid unexpected financial stress during the recovery process.

Take a few minutes to review your policy and ask yourself:
- Do I know my deductible amount?
- Could I comfortably cover this expense if my home was damaged?
- Do I understand how my deductible affects a claim payment?

The more familiar you are with your coverage, the better equipped you'll be to make informed decisions when it matters most.

A hurricane doesn't care where you keep your paperwork.

When preparing for a hurricane, most people think about batteries, water, and food. But what about the documents you'll need after the storm?

Important records such as insurance policies, identification, passports, property documents, medical records, and emergency contact information should be protected before a storm threatens. Store physical copies in a waterproof container and keep digital copies in a secure cloud account or email them to yourself for easy access.

Congratulations to Superintendent of Insurance Dana L. Munnings-Gray , who has been elected to the Executive Committee of the Group of International Insurance Centre Supervisors (GIICS) as the Caribbean Regional Representative, with the regional seat transitioning from Aruba to The Bahamas.

This appointment is a significant achievement for both the Insurance Commission of The Bahamas and the jurisdiction as a whole. As Caribbean Regional Representative, Mrs. Munnings-Gray will help shape the strategic direction of GIICS, ensure that the interests and perspectives of Caribbean insurance regulators are represented in international discussions, and strengthen the region’s voice in the development of global supervisory standards.

GIICS is an international body of insurance regulators from financial centres engaged in international insurance business. The organization promotes cooperation among supervisors, facilitates the sharing of regulatory expertise, supports the implementation of sound supervisory practices, and represents members' interests within global forums such as the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS).

Mrs. Munnings-Gray’s election reflects growing international confidence in The Bahamas’ regulatory leadership and reinforces the country’s commitment to strong, risk-based insurance supervision, regulatory innovation, and cross-border collaboration

When a hurricane strikes, one of the most valuable things you can have isn't in your emergency kit, it's already in your pocket.

Before a storm threatens, take photos and videos of every room in your home, including furniture, electronics, appliances, jewellery, and other valuables. Don't forget to capture model and serial numbers where possible.

Store your images securely by emailing them to yourself, saving them to the cloud, or sharing them with a trusted family member. These records can help establish the condition of your property before a loss and make the claims process significantly easier if damage occurs.

✅ Take 10 minutes this week and photograph one room. Future you may be thankful you did.
