STATEMENT FROM THE NATIONAL PROGRESSIVE INSTITUTE

Re: The Work of the Economic Recovery Committee

For Immediate Release
17th May, 2020

The National Progressive Institute (NPI) notes with disappointment the Government’s press release of 17th May, 2020 outlining the upcoming consultative process of the recently appointed Economic Recovery Committee. Unfortunately this appears to be another wasted academic exercise and duplicates the highly regarded work already completed under the National Development Plan. The National Development Plan properly and professionally engaged a wide sector of the Bahamian economy just a little over three (3) years ago. The approach seems to be redundant and more spinning of wheels.

More concerning, there seems to be little or no focus on the immediate and pressing economic realities of The Bahamas today. We need immediate measures to put people back to work and to stimulate the economy. The focus of the Committee seems to be long term and structural and does not address the economic hell we find ourselves in now.

We need jobs and foreign currency now. We need a plan to repose confidence in the economy now. We need to know how we will spur economic activity to keep us afloat now. The long term focus five (5) years down the road means nothing if we cannot get through the present nightmare.

The NPI calls on the Economic Recovery Committee to focus on jump-starting the economy now. The Government seems devoid of a sound economic plan. If your mandate is to recreate the work done under the National Development Plan, then you do your country a disservice.

The NPI and the Progressive Liberal Party is here to assist if called upon.
