HISTORY

So intertwined is the struggle for the right for women to vote agitated by the Women’s Suffrage Movement and the Progressive Liberal Party’s Women’s Branch, that the details of the official formation of the latter is under heavy debate by those who remain alive to recount our history. Nonetheless, what can be accepted without dispute is that the Women’s Branch of the PLP, formed in the la

tter years of the 1950s brought a greater degree of intensity and organization to the Movement through the personalities of bold and fearless PLP women, unafraid to brave the frontline and dismantle any remaining stumbling blocks to full equality. Another such personality is that of Dame Dr. Doris Johnson, who through direct membership of the rank and file of the Progressive Liberal Party became the voice of the last leg of the Movement and the historical pace-setter for every subsequent generation of women wishing to play a leading role in the advancement of the rights of Bahamians through politics, in particular the PLP. According to many who are still alive, after the suffrage movement, the Women’s Branch became dormant until around 1965 following “Black Tuesday” and the onset of the trek to Majority Rule. It is said that some one hundred women showed up to the meeting, and the leadership of the new Branch included, Dame Marguerite Pindling, Ms. Effie Walkes, Ms. Sylvia Johnson, Ms. Patsy Austin, Dame Albertha Isaacs, Lady Zoe Maynard, Ms. Peggy Francis, Ms. Malvernia Sands and others. Since its inception, The Women’s Branch of the Progressive Liberal Party has been the backbone and driving energy of our Party’s approach to matters of social justice, as well as the singular organ of our institution which has been most responsible for social outreach, fundraising and the organization and management of “on the ground” Party affairs. Every successive Chairperson has brought a fresh and relevant mandate to the Branch, reflective and responsive to the needs and challenges of her time. This tradition continues today with our present Chairperson, Mrs. Manita Wisdom. VISION

The vision of the New Providence Women’s Branch shall be to see women making a positive impact on Bahamian society and the international community by:
Achieving success personally, socially, professionally, economically and politically;

providing ideas and suggestions to influence policy makers to enact or amend laws and regulations that enhance the standard of living, health and social status for women and children;

Building strategic alliances with other women’s associations and civic organisations to accomplish our mission;

Offering themselves to community, charitable and public service;

Providing the necessary tools and information to mentor and prepare current and future generations of women for their service toward social, economic and political conditions in The Bahamas and the world at large.

BAHAMIANS WORSE OFF UNDER MINNIS" FNM GOVERNMENT

I am loath to respond to any speech or public commentary attributed to Prime Minister Minnis because he is a stranger to the truth and Bahamians have no legitimate reason to believe anything he has to say.

As for the FNM’s August 1992 election victory, they have a right to celebrate that anniversary but their social policies over the years have led to mass social dislocation and a precipitous rise in crime and general social decay. Minnis could blame crime on the 1980’s drug trade all he wants but the vast majority of the perpetrators and victims of crime are young black males in their twenties who were born during the 1990’s. One of the most glaring failures of the FNM is their social policy that continues to cause this country great harm.

In his first 100 days as Prime Minister, Dr. Minnis has ordered and sanctioned the wrongful arrest and detention of BAIC workers, former PLP Parliamentarians through direct and secret political interference in the work of the police force and has engaged in mass firings of public servants based purely on politics. None of the promises he made to the poor were kept: not on VAT elimination and not on tax exemptions for inner city communities to facilitate the development of those vulnerable areas. He has no policy on Baha Mar, Grand Bahama, the unacceptably high levels of crime, environmental protection, energy sector reform or the economy. He continues to talk down the Bahamian economy locally and internationally while injuring this country’s international reputation through ill-advised commentary.

He however did manage to fix up fat cat party donors and companies in which his cabinet Ministers have significant financial interests. A reduction in the business license fees place millions of dollars into the pockets of companies generating $50 million per year or more. The reduction in duty rates on washing and drying machine parts benefits D’Aguilars and Bahamasair could only find additional hangar and storage spaces in a building owned by DPM Peter Turnquest. So while Minnis and his inner circle of colleagues, friends and donors continue to benefit at the people’s expense, many Bahamians continue to suffer as a direct result of the decisions of this FNM government.

His Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister intentionally lied to House members on the budget deficit; this is an impeachable offence. Turnquest knew better about the handling of accrued expenditure but what Bahamians could expect from a party who ran an entire election campaign on lies and deceit so why should they stop now. Absolutely nothing the FNM said during the election campaign was true and they have been walking back, back peddling and climbing down from those lies ever since the 10th May.

Minnis must abandon with his public relations stunts as he buys time, the pointless photo opportunities, the public deceit, the sleight of hands and misleading the Bahamian people and start addressing the issues that really matter to the Bahamian people.

Bahamians are worse off under this Minnis led FNM government.

Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful men of The Bahamas who are either biological, spiritual, foster or adoptive fathers. May God continue to give strength, guidance and wisdom to all our men who have been blessed with the gift of raising children.

We encourage those of you whose fathers are still alive to tell them how much you appreciate their love and presence in your life.

For those whose fathers have left this earthly place, cherish the memories that you had and remember that God our Heavenly Father has promised that He will be a father to the fatherless.

Finally those of you that are at odds with your fathers (either dead or living), we encourage you to forgive them and make amends where possible, understanding that forgiveness benefits you more than the person requiring forgiveness.

Celebrate our men today as they are equally as important as our mothers. Happy Father's Day!!!

Happy first Anniversary to the Progressive Liberal Party on its re-election to office on 7th May, 2012. The New Providence Women’s Branch remains committed to supporting the government in its effort to execute its Charter for Governance in the interest of the Bahamian people. God has been good to our party and indeed our nation. We are grateful for His mighty acts that He has bestowed upon us. We pray for continued grace, wisdom, knowledge and understanding upon our leaders, Rt. Hon. Perry G. Christie, Hon. Philip “Brave” Davis, Cabinet Ministers and Parliamentarians as they continue to lead our country to a more prosperous day. We turned the economy around before and we will do it again by God’s grace!!!
