In 1992, the government recognized the need to broaden child abuse emphasis to include the protective aspect of child abuse. They also recognized the need to dedicate more time to this important social issue, hence, a decision was made to change the time frame from one week to one month, and to change the name from Family and Child Care Week to Child Protection Month. SCAN Poetry Competition under the theme “If Walls Could Talk.” This year's poetry competition winner was Ms. Kiarra Lockhart - Columbus Primary School. The second place winner was Shantea Rolle also from Columbus Primary School and 3rd Place Winner, Mya Minnis of Bahamas Academy Elementary Division. All of the top 3 finishers were awarded with laptop computers along with other prizes. The Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect Unit would like to express sincere appreciation for the trophies, prizes, awards and kind donations: The Trophy Case, Custom Computer Limited, Commonwealth Bank, Electro Telecom, G.H. Enterprises.

Sip and Paint Youth Edition 2017. The children had a great time painting with our volunteer artists. We would like to thank Nikki Davis, Abby Smith, Katrina Cartwright, Malika Pryor-Martin, and Andrew Knowles for volunteering their time and talents to this event.

The Pinwheel serves as the symbol for ending child abuse.. A pinwheel was chosen as it represents the whimsical nature of children and the idea that they should live a carefree life free from abuse and neglect.

Hello all. Child Protection Month 2017 is well under way throughout the Bahamas. Our theme this year is: Building Community. Building Hope. We have already had a number of events take place including the following:

Pinwheel launch to signify the Pinwheel as the new symbol for Child Protection. A Pinwheel represents the carefree life a child should experience absent abuse and/or neglect.
Paint the Town Blue - Public and Private Agencies wearing blue on Fridays throughout the month of April to signify their support of the cause to end child abuse and neglect.
S.C.A.N. Poetry Competition: Theme: If Walls Could Talk - Over 100 entries submitted. Winners selected on Tuesday, April 11, 2017. (Stay tuned for the announcement of the winners).
