Forest fire outbreaks in the country tend to increase during weekends, government holidays, and festive occasions, as picnic activities and recreational use of forest areas intensify. Forest areas under the Divisional Forest Office (DFO), Thimphu, being located in the capital city with a large urban population, receive a particularly high number of picnic-goers and recreational visitors. Due to the careless use of fire at picnic sites and recreational areas located close to or within forest landscapes, the frequency of fire outbreaks is observed to be higher during major festivals such as Tsechus, Losars, and government holidays.
To minimize the risk of fire outbreaks associated with such activities, DFO Thimphu conducted Forest Fire Surveillance Duty on 19 January 2026, coinciding with the celebration of Chunyipi Losar. Forest officials were stationed at strategic locations to create awareness and closely monitor the use of open fires at picnic sites. With these mitigation measures implemented in line with directives from the Department, DFO Thimphu successfully remained fire-free during Chunyipi Losar 2026. The Office extends sincere appreciation to all forestry staff who sacrificed their time to ensure a fire-free Losar and safeguard our forests from fire outbreaks.
