Bobirwa District Council yesterday commemorated the Day of the African Child in Gobajango, under the theme: "Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation, and hygiene for every child in Africa."
Speaking at the event, Chairperson for the Community Development and Social Services Committee, Honorable Obolokile Ndwapi, emphasized the critical importance of hygiene at the household level. She urged parents to protect their children's health by ensuring they have access to clean drinking water and that household utensils, clothing, and living spaces are kept thoroughly clean. In a creative appeal to the younger audience, Hon. Ndwapi also encouraged children to plant trees at home to practically observe how water nurtures life.
Delivering the keynote address, the Chairperson of the District Childrenβs Consultative Forum, Ms. Kimberly Mbaiwa, stated that the district remains fully committed to ensuring that every child enjoys both the right to education and the right to live in dignity.
Ms. Mbaiwa reminded the gathering that commemorating June 16 serves as a vital reminder that basic necessities should never be treated as privileges. "Every drop of water, every clean classroom, and every sanitary toilet is not a luxury, but a fundamental right," she said.
Addressing her peers directly, Mbaiwa added: βYour dignity matters, your health matters, and your future matters. We deserve to grow up healthy, to learn without interruption, and to dream without limits.β
Established in 1991, the Day of the African Child honors the students who lost their lives during the 1976 Soweto Uprising in South Africa, while raising global awareness about the ongoing need to improve education and protect children's rights across the continent.

The Bobirwa District Council concluded its six-day full council session with an oversight tour of key infrastructure projects and community areas of concern across the Bobonong constituency.
Welcoming the civic leaders, Kgosi Patane of Podipedi noted that residents of the Rasetimela ward face severe mobility challenges during the rainy season due to muddy terrain and poor road conditions. He expressed gratitude for the site visit, stating that the Council's presence demonstrates that leadership is actively listening to the grievances of the community.
On a more positive note, significant progress was reported regarding local sports infrastructure. The Acting Chief Architecture and Building Services Officer, Gorata Tshelametsi, announced that the long-awaited Bobonong Stadium is expected to be fully ready for public use within five weeks.
The delegation also inspected the ongoing Tsetsebye-Moletemane road project. Initiated in June 2019, the P53.7 million project is finally nearing completion, with an expected handover this July this year. Regional Principal Roads Engineer, Boy Maenzanise, confirmed that the project stands at 97% completion. According to Engineer Maenzanise, the remaining works include the road markings, installation of guardrails at culverts, and the plastering of a guardroom.
