22 June 2026 โ The Law Society of Botswana (LSB) today paid a courtesy call on Commissioner Anthony Mokento to discuss matters of mutual interest.
The Chairperson of the Law Society of Botswana, Mr Lesedi Tlotlo Moahi, identified lawyers' access to inmates as a key area requiring collaboration between the two institutions. While he acknowledged the unique security considerations within prison facilities, Mr. Moahi emphasised the importance of finding practical solutions that balance security requirements with the constitutional right of inmates to legal representation.
To streamline access procedures, Mr Moahi stated that the Law Society intends to provide the Botswana Prison Service with a database of compliant and duly registered legal practitioners across the country. He noted that the initiative would simplify the verification process and facilitate more efficient access to prison facilities by legal representatives.
Mr Moahi further pointed out the Society's ongoing efforts to strengthen the regulation of the legal profession. He noted that enhanced regulatory measures are intended to uphold professional standards within the legal fraternity.
In response, Commissioner Anthony Mokento proposed greater utilisation of the Botswana Prison Service's Video Visitation Facility, which enables legal practitioners to consult with clients remotely from the nearest prison facility. He explained that the system allows lawyers to connect with inmates housed in different prisons without the need for extensive travel, thereby improving convenience.
Commissioner Mokento noted that the facility is available in all prisons across the country and expressed confidence that it offers a practical and cost-effective solution that benefits both inmates and legal practitioners.
The meeting was also attended by Deputy Director โ Legal Services, Assistant Commissioner Kose Thabo, while Mr Moahi was accompanied by Executive Secretary of the Law Society of Botswana, Ms Marang Lilian Muzimo.

๐ฎ๐ญ ๐๐๐ป๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฒ โ Fatherโs Day at Molepolole Prison was marked with a reminder that imprisonment does not diminish a person's worth or identity.
Members of the Magokotswane Assemblies of God Church spent the day with inmates, donating toiletries and sharing messages of hope and encouragement. The gesture reminded everyone that, despite their current circumstances, prisoners remain fathers, brothers, uncles and valued members of their families and communities.
Officiating at the event, Assistant Minister of Justice and Correctional Services and Member of Parliament for Mahalapye East, Honourable Augustine Nyatanga, praised the church for demonstrating compassion and solidarity with those behind bars. He said the donation was not measured by its monetary value, but by the love, care and humanity behind it.
Hon. Nyatanga stressed the important role played by faith-based organisations in offender rehabilitation and reintegration. He noted that churches help shape character and support positive behavioural change. He encouraged the continued partnership between Botswana Prison Service and religious organisations in building safer and more peaceful communities.
The Assistant Minister also commended inmates at Molepolole Prison for maintaining an impressive record of discipline. He highlighted that the facility has recorded no escapes in the past five years. He urged inmates to take full advantage of rehabilitation programmes, particularly agriculture and contribute meaningfully to the country's food security and economic diversification efforts.
Earlier, Deputy Commissioner โ Rehabilitation and Reintegration, Keneilwe Mokwenaotsile, described the occasion as a genuine expression of love and compassion. She commended the church for reaching out to inmates. She reaffirmed that prisoners at Molepolole Prison continue to actively participate in various rehabilitation programmes that equip them with skills and prepare them for successful reintegration into society. She added that many inmates have embraced the opportunities available to them, recognising that imprisonment is temporary and that rehabilitation offers a pathway to a better future.
Giving the objectives of the day, Hon. Gorata Phakedi-Maphula stated that the donation was an initiative of the youth from Magokotswane Assemblies of God. She explained that the gesture was motivated by a desire to demonstrate love, compassion and solidarity with inmates, particularly on Father's Day. Hon. Phakedi-Maphula emphasised that the church's mission extends beyond preaching the Gospel to making a positive impact in communities through acts of kindness and service to those in need.
Giving a word of appreciation on behalf of fellow inmates, Mr Gorata Sebego expressed sincere gratitude to Magokotswane Assemblies of God for the thoughtful gesture. He noted that not all inmates come from privileged backgrounds. He added that the donated items would go a long way in complementing Government efforts to meet their daily needs.
Mr Sebego also thanked the Botswana Prison Service for nurturing partnerships with stakeholders such as the church, whose support plays an important role in rehabilitation and personal transformation. He further appealed to Magokotswane Assemblies of God and other stakeholders to continue extending such support, particularly through the provision of recreational equipment and learning materials that can contribute to inmates' personal development and successful reintegration into society.
The event was attended by Borakalalo Ward Councillor Hon. Bashima Khan, Molepolole District Commissioner Ms Segomotso Nkwane and members of Magokotswane Assemblies of God Church.

Botswana Prison Service participated in the Inaugural Session of the BotswanaโLesotho Bi-National Commission (BNC) held in Gaborone from 15 to 18 June 2026, where the two countries deepened cooperation across several strategic sectors, including prisons and corrections.
The high-level engagement was co-chaired by President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko of the Republic of Botswana and Prime Minister Samuel Matekane of the Kingdom of Lesotho. The discussions focused on advancing bilateral relations and translating diplomatic cooperation into practical initiatives that improve the lives of citizens in both countries.
A key outcome of the discussions was the commitment by Botswana and Lesotho to strengthen collaboration between their correctional institutions through the finalisation of a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Prisons and Corrections. Once concluded, the agreement will provide a framework for cooperation in correctional management, staff development, offender rehabilitation, institutional security and the exchange of professional expertise.
The two countries also advanced discussions on a proposed Agreement on the Interstate Transfer of Sentenced Persons, which will establish procedures for the transfer of sentenced offenders between Botswana and Lesotho. The arrangement is expected to promote humane correctional administration while enhancing cooperation on matters affecting foreign nationals serving sentences in either country.
To further strengthen correctional cooperation, Botswana and Lesotho agreed to improve the exchange of information regarding their respective nationals incarcerated in correctional facilities. Enhanced information-sharing will facilitate closer coordination between the two countries and improve support mechanisms relating to incarcerated foreign nationals.
The emerging partnership between the Botswana Prison Service and the Lesotho Correctional Service is expected to create opportunities for collaboration in areas such as human resource development, exchange of best practices, correctional training, infrastructure development, offender rehabilitation and successful reintegration programmes. Cooperation will also extend to sports, arts, culture and other initiatives that contribute to offender development and institutional wellbeing.
Commissioner Anthony Mokento led the Botswana Prison Service delegation comprising Senior Assistant Commissioner Noah Ramatebele and Assistant Commissioner Maikutlo Pitlagano. The Lesotho Correctional Service delegation was led by Acting Commissioner Matingoe Phamotse.
