Oil prices may have risen because of the Iran conflict, but they will not save Russia's economy. Windfall gains were significantly offset by a stronger currency and subsidy payments to oil companies and refiners.
In the first four months of 2026, Russia's budget deficit reached 5.9 trillion roubles, already far above the 3.8 trillion planned for the whole year. More than 200,000 businesses have closed since January. Interest rates remain high. Corporate debt has nearly doubled since the full-scale invasion. Labour shortages are persistent, taxes are rising, and domestic demand is falling.
EU sanctions, now 20 packages in force, continue to restrict Russia's access to technology, finance, logistics and energy markets, imposing long-term structural costs. Higher oil prices give Russia short-term breathing space. They do not fix the structural damage. The pressure continues.

"21 May became the International Day of Solidary with Political Prisoners in Belarus in the memory of Vitold Ashurak, who dies in a penal colony on 21 May 2021. Since then, at least eight other political prisoners lost their lives in detention.
Their deaths highlight the acute risks faced by political prisoners in vulnerable situations - those whose continued incarceration poses an immediate threat to their health or life. Today is the International Day of Solidarity with Political Prisoners in Belarus. Since 2021, nine political prisoners have lost their lives. More than 840 remain imprisoned. We call for the release of all political prisoners.

Яны павінны быць неадкладна і безумоўна вызваленыя.

Today, on the International Day of Solidarity with Political Prisoners in Belarus, 🇪🇺 Special Representative for Human Rights Kajsa Ollongren is highlighting the cases of political prisoners in particularly vulnerable situations.
Belarus must uphold its international human rights obligations and ensure humane treatment and dignity of all detainees.
Torture and ill-treatment remains absolutely prohibited in all circumstances, without exceptions.
The continued detention of political prisoners in especially vulnerable situations raises serious humanitarian concerns.
They should be immediately and unconditionally released.
