This successful interception near Gladden Spit highlights the importance of strategic investments in strengthening Belize’s marine enforcement capacity.
Through the Government Strategic Allocation Project under the Belize Blue Bonds Program, the Belize Coast Guard was equipped with Perimeter 8 drones to support real-time surveillance, monitoring, and enforcement across Belize’s waters. These tools are helping enforcement agencies detect and respond more effectively to illegal activities, while protecting critical marine areas and Belize’s valuable fisheries resources.
This achievement also reflects the importance of coordinated action among the Belize Coast Guard, Fisheries Department, and Co-management agencies in safeguarding Belize’s marine ecosystems.
The Belize Blue Bonds Program continues to support innovation, interagency collaboration, and stronger ocean governance for the protection of Belize’s blue spaces. 🐠💙
Three Hondurans Detained in Illegal Fishing Operation Near Gladden Spit
Three Honduran nationals were detained Thursday night after their vessel was intercepted near Gladden Spit during a joint operation targeting illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
The Belize Coast Guard's Maritime Enforcement Team, supported by a drone unit, spotted the vessel fishing in a spawning aggregation area. After the vessel attempted to evade authorities, a chase ensued and it was successfully intercepted.
The operation was carried out in collaboration with the Fisheries Department, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), and the Southern Environmental Association (SEA) as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal fishing in Belize's southern waters.
