On Wednesday, June 10th, the National Council on Ageing hosted a special workshop at the Police Training Academy, Belmopan under the theme: โRespect, Protect, and Report: Building a Safer Belize for Older Persons.โ
This session brought together police officers (Police Constables, Corporals, Sergeants) from across the country to strengthen their understanding of ageing, recognize signs of elder abuse, and apply ageโsensitive approaches when supporting older victims. Through interactive dialogue, case studies, and practical exercises, officers learned how to better protect and connect older persons to vital services.
We extend our thanks to Justice Anoinette Moore for sharing her knowledge on accessing the judiciary system, the Inter-American Convention on Protecting the Human Rights of Older Persons, and the history and evolution of the Families Act. Special thanks to Ms. Arlene Flores for her insightful presentation and demonstration on the challenges of ageism and the vulnerabilities faced by older persons. We also thank the Family Support and Gender Affairs Department for highlighting the array of services they provide across Belize. And to all of the officers in attendance, thank you for actively participating and dedicating your time to this knowledge sharing workshop.
Together, we can ensure that ageing in Belize is accompanied by dignity, respect, and security, not fear or neglect.
