Mama's Group Orange Walk

MAMASGroup is an NGO committed at empowering the community to be self-sufficient with a skill/trade. The classes were from 2pm to 4pm from Monday to Friday.

MAMAS - (Mujeres Ayudando a Mujeres Asuperarse)

A non-profit organization, M.A.M.A.S Group was formed in 2005 by 6 volunteer women who possessed several skills. The group decided to teach other women who did not have a skill or trade so that they may become more independent and self-sufficient. The group’s skills are as follows:

In September of 2005 Mamas Group started offering classes FREE OF CHARGE with only 12 ladies. These classes were held at the Orange Walk Zenobia Meggs HelpAge Center. Courses taught cake decorating, beading, counseling, macrame and handicrafts. These courses ran for three (3) months and of the 12 ladies that attended the courses, nine (9) graduated. In 2006, the group launched a summer program for children ranging from 8 to 14 years old. Children were given the courses in handicrafts, crochet, beading and embroidery. A total of twenty-six (26) children participated and all graduated. These classes are still continuing annually. That same year in 2006, (13) thirteen ladies graduated from our second session of classes and this time the courses ran for six (6) months. In the year 2007, another graduation ceremony was held in the same skills and thirty-one (31) ladies graduated from courses lasting for six (6) months. In 2008, classes were relocated from the HelpAge Center to Ophelia Novelo’s residence (founding member) at #23 San Narciso Street, Orange Walk Town. The group was able to purchase some tables and chairs from a small fee collected from the students to accomodate them and the teachers comfortably. For that year MAMAS held courses from February 23rd to December 12th 2008 of which seventy-six (76) ladies residing in the surrounding villages of Orange Walk and Corozal districts. Classes are held from Monday to Friday from 9am to 11am. In December 2008, the MAMAS Group made a donation to the Northern Regional Hospital of which twenty-five (25) small vases of floral arrangements and twenty-six (26) pillow slips were donated. In 2009, classes were expected to begin on February 23rd from 9am to 11am for ladies in the villages and from 2pm to 4pm for ladies living in town. These courses ran from February to December. Since then, MAMAS has been nationally and international known for their unique works and the selfless effort of founder, Ophelia Novelo. In January of 2017, the US Embassy to Belize recognized Ms. Novelo as "Wonder Woman in Belize" for that month. Currently, the group has evolved to having built a classroom where ladies sit and learn in comfort any trade or skill of their interest. Wednesdays- Advance cake decorating from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Wednesdays- pastry from 1 to 4 p.m. (breads n pies)

Thursdays- cooking from 8 to 11 a.m. (Chinese n belizean cuisine)

12 week course cost: $325 (includes registration)
