Funk Caye, an island in southern Belize, 16 miles east of Placencia and 3 miles from the Barrier Reef OK. Buy me." It's a mangrove jungle, mostly impenetrable.
So our lifestyle is a little unpredictable, but not in our craziest moments have we ever considered buying an island. But, it is amazing what a really good gelato ice-cream can do to your sanity. There we were enjoying our gelato standing in front of a number of real estate poster boards, idly surveying property ideas for staying in Belize, when this 'for sale' ad just leapt out at us, saying "Buy

A Funky Update is well overdue. Over the last 3 years, we have transformed our 3 acres of paradise from a wet mangrove jungle to a beautiful, sanded island retreat. We have a dock, helipad, palm trees, garden areas, wooded areas, and as we have said before, one of the largest, safest anchorages for boats in the area. Snorkeling and kayaking opportunities everywhere we look.
We love Funk Caye and have been spending as much time there as possible, to enjoy the tranquility, the views, the colours and flora and fauna.
But having had this incredible opportunity to achieve such a transformation, we believe that further development would be a challenge for us and have decided to place the caye on the market to sell.
There is no doubt that passing Funk Caye on to a new owner will be a very sad moment after all the fun times, the hard work and the massive learning curve we have had the opportunity to enjoy.
In the meantime, we continue to spend time there, we have a permanent caretaker, and the gardens and landscape continue to be improved.
Our tractor finally arrived at Funk Caye today. Both Funky Spirit and Funky Kubota earning their keep.
FUNK CAYE has been off the air for a while, but we are BACK.
Although we had been making great incremental progress on the caye over the last year, it has been difficult to document that progress by word or photo.
But we now have a dock, we have sand, we have the beginnings of beaches, we have flowers and growing palms and fruit trees.
Every day we are out on the caye, we have to pinch ourselves to realise how lucky we have been to have found this gem and to have become its caretakers.

It has taken a year to decide how to manage the logistics of the first real day of work on Funk Caye. So far, the only real access to the island, has been by kayak through the mangrove.
So how to load all the requirements for building a camp for our clearing team and all the tools and supplies necessary for a 3 week clearing operation, get out to the island, move everything ashore and have the camp built and habitable, with water and sanitation by the end of the day was something of quandary.
Turned out to be a walk in the park. Our team of 4 was so well organized, that we were able to take a step back and watch. We anchored Funky Spirit very close to shore just outside the mangrove. Using the aluminium dinghy, Oh My, as a barge we solved the shore delivery challenge
Three hours after arrival, everything ashore, camp built and habitable with water and sanitation and dinner being prepared.
