Xunantunich Archaeological Reserve
A major ceremonial Late Classic site in Western Belize, and occupied for only 300-400 years. Scared by the apparition, the man ran back to the village.
The name Xunantunich, which is also Yucatecan Maya for ‘Maiden of the Rock,’ was given its name by the modern inhabitants of San Jose Succotz. Local legend holds that sometime around the end of the 1800’s, a gentleman from the village went hunting near the site.
