MV Celebrates 25 Years
We’re sharing facts, photos, and history all year to celebrate 25 Years of Madawaska Valley. View all our shares so far on our website: www.madawaskavalley.ca/MV25.
In 1977, Radcliffe Township Community Hall, now the Combermere Community Centre, celebrates its opening day in May 1977. The offices of the Township were located in the nearby fire hall, and the outdoor rink had existed for years already in the spot its located in now.
In 1978, Valley Manor opened its doors. A sod turning ceremony, shown here, took place on May 2 1977 with the official opening taking place almost exactly a year later on May 24 1978. The dream began much sooner, as the Board of Directors at the local hospital noted a need for a long term care facility in the area. The announcement from the provincial government came in September of 1974 while numerous sites were toured for the facility, the Mintha’s property was chosen and the facility was built on the street bearing their name. Nearly fifty years after its opening, the Manor has been working towards redevelopment at the former Sherwood Public School site beside the hospital.
