FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BRANDON (October 24, 2026) - Four city council candidates are banding together to help advance safety and security for residents through advocacy for a pathway lighting project, the team announced in a joint press release.

The pathways, which encompass more than 20kms of routing throughout the city, intertwines between neighbourhoods, providing opportunities year-round for residents to get out and enjoy the city, while furthering their own wellbeing.

“We saw this as a unique opportunity for us to show unity and respond to feedback we have all heard from residents,” said Shaun Cameron, Candidate for re-election in Ward 4. “For me it is the pathways along 34th street and along Pacific Ave. I hear about, so approaching the initiative in a manner like this, we feel residents can know we are working as a team to continue to serve, with pathway lighting being a priority that we hope to collectively bring to the table through budget commitments and granting opportunities,” he added.

The City of Brandon loop is utilized by thousands of residents yearly, and is a testament to the future thinking of previous councils to ensure the amenity is there to serve as a free option for all to experience. As our city continues to grow though, the group felt there was a need for improvements, with a hope to bring it forward as a joint initiative.

“The lack of lighting in Ward 10 has created some very dark corridors which render the pathways nearly unusable after dark. Patricia Avenue from 1st Street through to 9th Street (in Ward 10) is just one example. This is an area without street lights, so it is an especially dark zone.” said Tyson Tame, Candidate for re-election in Ward 10. “I’m thankful that past councils prioritized this form of connectivity. We hope to collaborate to finish off these pathway investments by increasing their use, safety, and convenience.” he added.

The science backs it up too. Studies such as the one performed by Accessibility Standards Canada highlight the fact that urban and pathway lighting in Canada is of a benefit to communities, alongside international data referenced by Canadian urban planning frameworks. Both show that pathway lighting significantly influences pedestrian safety, active transportation rates, and crime deterrence. The ASC suggests a minimum of 50 lux at pathway entrances and 100 lux along pathways.

“There are three Riverbank pathway areas that are unlit. An area to the south had lighting that has become inoperational due to past flooding” said Heather Karrouze, Candidate for re-election in Ward 1.. “Areas to the north and west, leading from Kirkcaldy onto the Riverbank area have not been lit. Pathway lighting in these areas is crucial to safety, particularly in the darker, wintertime months.” she added.

A primary focus of Canadian urban policy is encouraging walking and cycling. Organizations like Climate Insight Canada have also noted that sufficient lighting on paths, trails, underpasses, and intersections acts as natural surveillance, increasing visibility and fostering a heightened sense of security after dark.

“My area of focus would be Patricia from 9th Street to Tracey/18th street, and also from the traffic circle on 9th Street through the cemetery.” said Jason Splett, candidate for re-election in Ward 8.

The city is currently undertaking work to look at lighting standards, with council being part of those discussions. In approaching this initiative in this way, the four candidates wanted to reflect the asks residents have made of them throughout their time serving the community.

“We’ve worked together on so many initiatives around the council table this term, and really see this campaign commitment as furthering the ask for this work should we be given the opportunity to continue to serve this fall,” the group added.

Residents of the City of Brandon will go to the polls October 28th.

Watch In Brandon Councillor Candidate Interview Heather Karrouze

10/20/2026

We asked municipal council and school board candidates three questions about what wellness means to them.

1. What does it mean to be well as a community?
2. How would you as a councillor/mayor assist in moving forward CWC priorities?
3. Where does the mission of the CWC align with your own personal values?

From Heather Karrouze, candidate for Ward 1:

Firstly, while we often associate wellness with physical well-being, it is so much more. One’s physical, emotional and mental well-being are inter-related and if one element is suffering, the rest will likely follow. A well, or healthy, community is one which seeks to create new, or enrich existing, opportunities for its members to experience connectedness, safety and growth. Ensuring that ALL members of community have access to not just basic needs, but to opportunities to flourish and be physically, emotionally and mentally well should be our goal.

As a councillor, it has been, and will continue to be, my responsibility to speak up for those who are in need in our community.. for the vulnerable, the hungry, the broken.. to ensure that as a community, we work to create an environment wherein all have access to food, water, shelter and the necessities that lift up and offer dignity and a sense of worth and belonging.

I have spent the better part of my adult life volunteering and working to help my community, whether that has been through leading or participating in fundraising efforts like the Huron Carole, which has raised thousands of dollars here in Brandon to assist such organizations as Samaritan House, or in my day to day work of offering hope, healing and encouragement at The Counselling Centre. If re-elected, I will continue to support the efforts of the CWC to improve wellness in our community.
