Happy Wednesday! Did you know that Sparky carries on the tradition of having a Dalmatian dog work with firefighters.

Originally, Dalmatians; a ratter breed, helped keep the stables free of rodents when the equipment was pulled by horses. Additionally, the dogs would run along-side the horses to the fire calls and help keep them calm while the Firefighters tackled the blaze. They were good companions for the members but as time has progressed, lack of work for the dogs, allergies, and public restrictions have made a fire hall an unfriendly home for live dogs. Here at BFES we have had two fire dogs, Frisco from 1905-1906 and Duchess from 1969 to 1979.

Sparky is the mascot for Firefighters. A special dog with special skills, Sparky works closely with BFES to provide fire safety education in our classrooms. For more information on Sparky please visit https://sparky.org

Happy Tuesday! Cooking fires are easily preventable if you follow these fire safety tips:

1. Always stay in the kitchen while you are cooking.
2. Never leave cooking unattended and if you must leave the kitchen, turn off the stove!
3. Wear clothes with short or tight-fitting sleeves while you cook to avoid catching your clothes on fire.
4. Always keep a tight-fitting lid and an oven mitt near the stove when you are cooking and if the pot or pan catches fire, slide the lid over it and turn off the stove. Do not try and lift or move it.
5. Unplug kettles, frying pans and other appliances when not in use.
6. Turn pot handles inward where you can’t bump them and children can’t grab them.

Happy Friday! To end of Fire Prevention Week we are going back to 1982.

This picture was taken 44 years ago this week outside the Central Fire Hall, for Fire Prevention Week. Their theme that year was "Learn not burn wherever you are".

It is the 2026 Fire Chief for a Day!

One grade 4 student from each Brandon school as well as students from our GVMA partners of Souris, Carberry, Shilo, Wawanesa, Douglas and Forrest are spending the day being Fire Chiefs on Fire Chief for a Day.

This morning was spent completing activities at the #1 Firehall, then off to lunch at McDonalds, and then this afternoon was spent at the Manitoba Emergency Services College learning all about fire prevention.

The little fire chiefs even get a few goodies too! We would like to thank all of our GVMA partners, BFES and Manitoba Emergency Services College staff and of course McDonalds for making this day so special for our youngest fire chiefs!

Happy Wednesday! Remember to use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.

When you use an inexpensive charger, you run the risk of it not working properly and being a fire risk.

Plug in. Power up. Stay safe.

Have a great day and stay safe!
