Happy Monday! Did you know that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths? Brandon Fire & Emergency Services is reminding the public of a few simple safety tips and precautions that can prevent most heating fires from happening.

REMEMBER: THREE FEET FROM THE HEAT!

 Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove or portable space heater.

 Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around the stove, open fires and space

It doesn’t take much for a candle flame to start a larger fire. Paper, curtains, bedding, and seasonal decorations can catch quickly.

If the fire is contained to the item that caught fire and you have the right extinguisher, you may be able to extinguish it before it spreads.

If the fire has already spread beyond that, the right move is to get out and call 911. Knowing which situation you are in is what makes early response possible and what helps protect property and save lives.

🧯🔥 DO YOU KNOW HOW TO USE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER? 🔥🧯

When a fire starts, every second counts! Knowing how to properly use a fire extinguisher could make all the difference.

✅ Remember the P.A.S.S. Method!

🧯 P – PULL the pin to unlock the extinguisher.

🎯 A – AIM the nozzle at the base of the fire, not the flames.

✊ S – SQUEEZE the handle to release the extinguishing agent.

↔️ S – SWEEP the nozzle from side to side at the base of the fire until it's extinguished.

🚨 SAFETY FIRST!

✔️ Only attempt to extinguish a small, contained fire if it's safe to do so.

✔️ Make sure you have the correct type of extinguisher for the fire.

✔️ Always keep a clear escape route behind you.

✔️ If the fire spreads, smoke becomes dangerous, or you're unsure, evacuate immediately and call 911.

✔️ Even if the fire appears to be out, have the fire department assess the situation.

Is Your Fire Extinguisher Mounted at the Correct Height?

Having a fire extinguisher is important, but how and where it's mounted matters too!

Did you know that fire extinguishers must be installed at the proper height to ensure they're accessible and ready when needed?

📏 FIRE EXTINGUISHER MOUNTING HEIGHTS

According to NFPA 10 guidelines:

✅ Extinguishers weighing 40 lbs (18.1 kg) or less: The top of the extinguisher should be no higher than 5 feet (1.53 m) above the floor.

✅ Extinguishers weighing more than 40 lbs (18.1 kg): The top should be no higher than 3.5 feet (1.07 m) above the floor.

✅ Minimum clearance: The bottom of the extinguisher must be at least 4 inches (102 mm) above the floor.

🚫 COMMON INSTALLATION MISTAKES:

Mounted too high to reach safely.

Sitting directly on the floor.

Hidden behind equipment or storage.

Blocked by furniture or other obstacles.

Not properly secured to an approved bracket or cabinet.

🔥 REMEMBER: A fire extinguisher is only useful if you can access it quickly during an emergency!
