Progressive Housing Society Progressive Housing Society is a Burnaby organization that provides support services to community members struggling with mental health and homelessness.

Progressive Housing Society is a non-profit organization. Our Homeless Outreach helps Burnaby residents by:

-Engage with unsheltered individuals dealing with homelessness and provide support services to help stabilize lives.

-Connect with individuals with no income, including making and going with individuals to appointments to seek income.

-Assist individuals to locate a rental unit, apply to social housing, and set up new home with furniture.

-Provide follow-up support that ensures individuals have effectively transitioned to housing and are receiving appropriate health and social service programs and services.

-Provide support services to improve skills, personal health and hygiene, household management, financial management, crisis intervention and problem solving and provide follow-up related to these areas.

-Liaise with and refer to community agencies, groups, organizations and businesses

The Mental Health Team's support programs provide support services to individuals with a severe and persistent mental illness by assisting them to develop and maintain the skills needed to live independently in the community. Staff provide support areas in the following areas:

-self-care
-personal safety
-health and wellness
-time management
-communication skills
-illness management
-financial management
-nutrition
-leisure and relationships
-vocational interests
-educational goals
-advocacy around housing issues

There is generally no time limit on how long participants may receive support. As long as participants follow their Mental Health Plan and continue to work on goals, support is provided.

We are pleased to share that in addition to being able to access our Health-in-Supportive-Housing (HSH) Team for their health care needs, every resident at Norland Place & Ledger Place who wasn't already connected to a family doctor now has one.

Our team supported clients in accessing the Health Connect Registry, which matched them with primary care providers so they can get regular checkups, manage ongoing health needs, reduce the need for emergency care, and set them on the path to enjoy a healthier future.

Our Homeless Outreach team meets people wherever they are, on the street, in a shelter, or between housing, and helps them take the next step toward stability. That can mean securing ID, connecting to healthcare, or finding a safe place to stay.

Every conversation starts with what someone needs right now, and support continues well past that first contact, through the search for housing, the move-in, and beyond.

At Douglas Shelter, our tax clinic helped 15 guests get caught up, completing 21 years of back taxes between them.

For many, that means unlocking benefits and credits they're owed, opening the door to income supports that can help build a path toward stable housing.

Sometimes the difference between staying housed and losing a home comes down to a damage deposit, a month's rent, or a utility bill. Our Homeless Prevention Program steps in before a crisis happens, helping people at higher risk, including families, youth leaving foster care, women leaving unsafe situations, and people transitioning out of hospital or correctional systems, stay in stable housing. It's practical support, from moving costs to setting up a new home, aimed at giving people a real foundation.

Housing First means exactly what it sounds like. People get a safe, stable home right away, without having to meet conditions first.

Once someone has a home, it's easier to work on health, connection, and goals.

At Progressive Housing Society, that looks like supportive housing paired with on-site staff, health connections, and skill-building, all working together so stability can grow from a strong foundation.

It's a full spectrum of support, from shelter to housing to long-term stability. Sites such as our shelters, Norland, Ledger, Holly house, allow us to create this starting point for our clients.

A home makes everything else becomes possible.

Homelessness Action Week is here! 🏠

No one can end homelessness alone. We’re thankful every day for the people, partners, and community who walk alongside us.

All week, we’ll be showing how our programs help people find stability, from shelter to housing to everyday support. Follow along!

Join us this Thursday, October 15th, at the Society to End Homelessness in Burnaby’s Homeless Connect event, where we’ll be alongside other communities and organizations.

For our Richmond community, we will be holding a BBQ at our Richmond Drop-in Centre on Friday October 16th, between 11:30-1pm.

Everyone deserves a safe place to call home, and only together can we make that happen.

Not everyone who needs support needs a new place to live. Our Community Living Support (CLS) Program is built for exactly that. Clients in this program already have their own housing, so instead of a rental subsidy, they receive something just as important: consistent, personalized support from our team.

Each person in the program works with a support worker to build a recovery plan, a roadmap shaped entirely around their own goals. For some, that means building daily living skills like budgeting or cooking. For others, it's connecting with community resources, pursuing education, or working toward a volunteer or job opportunity. The plan looks different for everyone, because recovery looks different for everyone.

Support through CLS can last a few months or continue for years. There's no countdown clock. Clients stay connected to the program for as long as they need it, meeting with their support worker as often as their goals require.

This is what integrated support looks like in practice: housing stability and mental health support working side by side, so people can keep building the life they want, on their own terms.
