The Beckwith Heritage Committee recently hosted an informative day exploring the history of Beckwith Township on our Heritage Bus Tour, following a route from Black’s Corners through Ashton, Prospect, and Franktown.

With the theme, “Pioneers of Business,” the tour explored some of the early industries that shaped our communities, including cheese factories, bush harvesting, stone quarries, ice harvesting, and the railways. Along the way, we stopped at the United Cemeteries, Ashton United Church, Dewar and Kennedy Cemeteries, and the Prospect Church.

Thank you to the members of the Beckwith Heritage Committee, for sharing their local historical knowledge on the guided sections of the tour. We’d also like to thank the Carleton Place and Beckwith Heritage Museum, for generously loaning us their ice harvesting equipment to display as part of the tour, as well as the Lanark County Genealogical Society, for partnering with us to promote this event.

Thank you to everyone who joined us! We look forward to discovering and sharing more of Beckwith’s heritage with you.

• Member Brian Dowdall – Deputy Reeve
• Member Jessica McKenna-Kelso - Councillor

Attention Beckwith Businesses:

If you are interested in participating in the survey please reach out to the Township or the County to coordinate.

Lanark County Council received a progress update on the Business Retention and Expansion (BR+E) program, a proactive program designed to support local businesses and strengthen the region’s economic vitality.

Lanark County BR+E Coordinator Tim Woods said survey questions were completed and five volunteer training sessions have been held, resulting in 45 trained volunteers to conduct structured business interviews. They have reached out to more than 300 businesses and have completed 80 interviews so far, with a goal of 200. This will lead to working with community leaders to build action plans to address the results, followed by implementation and monitoring. There are six focus sectors: retail, tourism, agriculture, skilled trades and construction, manufacturing, and natural resources.

“Information gathered through this initiative will be used to develop a targeted action plan, and input from businesses is critical in order to identify key priorities and inform decision-making,” Woods said. Businesses can sign up at www.lanarkcounty.ca/grow.
