Comox Valley RCMP encourages everyone to make safety part of their Halloween plans
As Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, the Comox Valley RCMP is reminding residents to celebrate responsibly and take extra care on local roads and sidewalks.
More children, families and partygoers are expected to be out on Halloween night. Additional police officers will be on duty, conducting patrols and focusing on impaired driving, dangerous driving and overall public safety.
"We want everyone to enjoy Halloween and return home safely," says Inspector Scott Mercer, Officer in Charge of the Comox Valley RCMP. "Whether you are trick-or-treating, driving or attending a celebration, plan ahead, remain alert and look out for one another."
For drivers
• Slow down in residential areas, drive below the posted speed limit and watch for children who may enter the road unexpectedly.
• Avoid distractions and keep your full attention on the road.
• Use extra caution at intersections, crosswalks, alleys and driveways.
• Never drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Arrange a designated driver, taxi, rideshare or overnight accommodation before celebrating.
• Ensure costumes, decorations and passengers do not obstruct your view.
For trick-or-treaters and families
• Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult or travel in a trusted group.
• Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks, and cross only when it is safe.
• Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street.
• Carry a flashlight or glow stick and add reflective material to costumes and treat bags.
• Choose costumes that fit properly and do not limit vision or movement.
• Stay in familiar, well-lit areas and agree on a route and return time.
• Never enter a stranger's home or vehicle.
Check Halloween treats
Parents and caregivers should inspect all candy and treats before they are eaten. Discard anything that is unwrapped, opened, damaged, homemade by an unknown person or otherwise appears suspicious. Consider food allergies, choking hazards and age-appropriate treats. Anyone who finds a suspicious item should avoid handling it unnecessarily, keep it away from children and contact police.
Fireworks safety
Fireworks rules vary by community. Residents should check with their own municipality for local bylaws, permit requirements, restrictions and approved times and locations before purchasing, possessing or using fireworks.
The Comox Valley RCMP wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable Halloween.
