Work continues today in the aquatic centre at Western Financial Place, following the closure of the lane pool on October 28, 2026, due to a mechanical issue with the main pool heat exchanger.

The heat exchanger behind the lane pool closure has been replaced and is no longer an issue. Staff are working to drain the lane pool and are aiming to have it refilled and heated ready for public use by Wednesday, November 4, 2026. The wave pool, hot tub and steam room remain open and available for all pool visitors.

Out of an abundance of caution, the City of Cranbrook and Interior Health are advising the public and pool users that roughly 75 litres of ethylene glycol may have leaked into the lane pool. Both the City and Interior Health continue to investigate how much ethylene glycol may have entered the pool and over how long.

Ethylene glycol can be harmful if swallowed, but very little is absorbed through the skin. People who used the lane pool may have been exposed to small amounts. Based on the amount currently estimated to be in the pool, accidentally swallowing small amounts of water is not expected to cause any health problems for youth or adults. Serious effects are very unlikely from the exposure described.

If you or your child used the lane pool on October 26, 27 or 28 and have no symptoms or health concerns, no action is needed at this time. Symptoms following exposure could include nausea, vomiting or stomach discomfort.

If you are concerned that an infant or small child swallowed pool water from the lane pool, or if anyone who used the lane pool has symptoms of concern, call the BC Drug and Poison Information Centre’s 24-hour Poison Information Line at 1-800-567-8911 or 604-682-5050. Telephone interpreting is available in more than 150 languages.

We appreciate your patience and understanding while we get things back in order, so we can welcome back our lane pool users soon. Western Financial Place Interior Health

Due to a mechanical issue with the main pool heat exchanger, the City of Cranbrook is closing the lane pool at Western Financial Place today (October 28, 2026) and tomorrow (October 29) out of an abundance of caution.

The wave pool, hot tub and steam room remain open and available for users.

The City is working closely with both Interior Health and an external water quality testing company to help assess things further.

We appreciate your patience and understanding while we get things straightened out. Western Financial Place

Did you know that when the Cranbrook RCMP recover stolen items, their goal is to return them to their rightful owners and hold those in possession of stolen items accountable.

But here’s the catch—they can’t act unless they know an item was stolen. No report? No registration? They may have to hold it, dispose of it, or even return it to the person they seized it from.

Keep your property registered. Report theft promptly. It helps them help YOU.

As the dust settles on the 2026 municipal election held this past weekend in Cranbrook, the work of governing now begins for the incoming Mayor and Council over the next couple of weeks before they hold their very first meeting as a Council in early November.

Starting on Monday, all members of Council will be taking part in a week-long mandatory and comprehensive orientation program, which is designed to help them better understand their roles, their responsibilities, and duties, while introducing them to the work of each City department.

Council members will learn about foundational governance, role clarity, parliamentary procedures, planning, and public hearings. Municipal finance 101, understanding the governance structure, boards and committees, and City department presentations will round out the orientation week. The new Council is set to be sworn in and officially take their oath of office next week. Council members will also take part in a neighbourhood visit to review specific sites in Cranbrook that will be topics for Council during their term.

“I am very excited to meet the team, and to begin the important work of learning and working together,” says Mayor-elect Tom Shypitka. “For anyone that has not been involved in governance before, the learning curve is steep. Together, we will grow to best serve the residents of Cranbrook.”

The new Council inaugural regular Council meeting set for Monday, November 2, 2026.
