More than two dozen people were arrested last week as part of targeted operations by the Manitoba Integrated Violent Offenders Apprehension Unit (MIVOAU) in several communities.

MIVOAU, which is comprised of RCMP and Winnipeg Police Service officers, targets the most violent, dangerous and prolific offenders – including suspects in serious and violent crimes and individuals who are wanted on outstanding arrest warrants.

From Oct. 19-21, MIVOAU officers visited Dauphin, Grandview, Winnipegosis, Sandy Bay First Nation and Ebb and Flow First Nation as part of efforts to locate and arrest offenders. MIVOAU was assisted in their search by several RCMP units, including Police Dog Services, the West District General Investigation Section (GIS) and the West District Crime Reduction Enforcement Support Team (CREST).

In total, RCMP knocked on 143 doors, arrested 28 offenders, seized three fi***rms and an ounce of co***ne over the three days.

The most notable incident occurred just after 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 21, when officers went to a residence in Grandview. In that incident, officers searched the residence with the owner’s consent and found a fi***rm in plain view.

Six people inside the home were arrested, including one who was wanted by MIVOAU officers. Officers subsequently found a small quantity of co***ne in the residence. All six suspects were charged with drug and/or weapons-related offences.

On Oct. 20, at approximately 6:20 p.m., Dauphin RCMP responded to an apparent road rage incident involving two motorists.

The incident occurred near the intersection of 9th Avenue and 2nd Street Southwest in Dauphin.

Officers learned a 31-year-old male driver was waiting at a four-way stop when an SUV pulled up beside him. The SUV driver pulled out a knife and made gestures that he was going to open his door.

The victim then left the scene.

Shortly thereafter, the same SUV was involved in another incident, this time on the 1400-block of Main Street South. RCMP learned a male suspect had gotten out of the SUV and acted erratically towards occupants of another vehicle. The suspect then returned to the SUV and was seen travelling towards a nearby hotel.

At approximately 7 p.m., RCMP located the suspect vehicle parked at the hotel. Officers then found the male inside the hotel and arrested him.

Dylan Smith, 30, of Valley River First Nation is charged with:
• Assault with a weapon; and
• Possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He was released on a release order by a justice with a future court date.

The traffic stop occurred on Buchy Place in Dauphin, shortly after RCMP saw a male leave a nearby residence and get into the vehicle.

An officer approached and began speaking to the vehicle’s occupants. The male passenger gave the officer a false name. The suspect was arrested. During the arrest, RCMP found he had two large knives on him.

• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
