What are Red Flag Laws, and what are they intended to do?

In Canada, the Criminal Code provides legal processes for applying for certain court orders when fi***rm access raises safety concerns.
These processes allow a court to consider the circumstances and determine whether an order is appropriate under the law.

An application does not automatically mean an order will be granted. Each situation must be considered based on the information presented and the applicable legal requirements.

Understanding how these laws work is an important part of having informed conversations about prevention, protection, and safety.

Sometimes the most important thing you can do is simply be there. 💜

If you think someone you care about may be experiencing domestic abuse, it’s natural to want to fix the situation. But what they often need most is someone who will listen, believe them, and support them without judgment.

Remember:
💜 Check in when it’s safe.
💜 Believe what they’re telling you.
💜 Validate their feelings.
💜 Avoid blaming or criticizing their choices.
💜 Support them in making their own decisions.
💜 Learn about the dynamics of abuse so you can respond in a way that helps—not unintentionally causes more harm.

You don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes being a safe, supportive person in someone’s life can make all the difference.

If you or someone you know needs support, Pembina Crisis Connection Society is here to help.

💬 What’s one piece of advice you wish more people knew about supporting someone experiencing abuse?

Red Flag Laws are an important topic to understand, but there is a lot of information behind how they work.

Over the next few weeks, we will be breaking down the information into smaller, easier-to-understand posts covering what these laws are, how the court process works, and what role safety planning plays.

The goal is to help our community better understand the legal process, the protections available, and the limitations of these orders.

Stay tuned as we explore each topic in more detail.
