At this year’s Annual Representative Assembly (ARA), educator and scholar Dr. Dwayne Donald was presented with the Alberta Teachers’ Association’s (ATA) highest honour, honorary membership, recognizing his profound contributions, both provincially and nationally, to Indigenous education and reconciliation.

Donald, a professor in the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Education, holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Reimagining Teacher Education with Indigenous Wisdom Traditions.

Congratulations to educational psychology master's student Joanna Huynh on receiving the 2026 Margaret Brine Graduate Scholarship from the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW)!

The Margaret Brine Graduate Scholarship is awarded to female graduate students at the University of Alberta who have shown strong academic achievement and a dedication to leadership, education, and meaningful community involvement aligned with the values of CFUW.

"This recognition means a lot to me because it reflects not only my academic work, but also the importance of supporting women in higher education and research. Join the Graduate Student Peer Support Program’s May Picnic Mixer!

It’s a casual, drop-in event where you can wind down and relax over painting and popsicles, meet new people, and chat with fellow graduate students about grad life.

The Phyllis Weston Award was established in memory of Phyllis Weston who taught for 40 years in Calgary Public Schools. Her teaching had a lasting impact on many students.

One award of approximately $1,500, applied directly to tuition. The deadline to apply is June 1 at midnight.

The Graduate Student Peer Support (GSPS) program is a network of volunteer graduate students trained to provide support to peers in a one-on-one and group format. The program aims to foster a supportive, inclusive, and empathetic environment for all graduate students.

What does a GSPS volunteer do?

Provide confidential peer-to-peer support for any level of graduate student dealing with stress, isolation, challenges within their university work, teaching or research environment, health and safety issues.

Offer guidance and direct graduate students to university resources or subject matter experts.

Attend tabling events and host community mixers to help build a sense of community among graduate students.

May 5, in all about raising awareness of this day, wear red, inform yourself about MMIWG .

May 5th which is the National Day of Awareness for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the epidemic of Missing and Murdered First Nation, Métis and Inuit Women and Girls, who face disproportionately high rates of violence and murder. Advocacy and awareness days like May 5th are so essential in amplifying the voices of the voiceless and encourages greater accountability from each and every one of us.

The Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) at the University of Alberta is inviting applications for the role of kiskinwahamakew (Academic Learning Facilitator).

This role is more than academic support. It is about walking alongside students, building relationships, and supporting student journeys through teaching, learning, and community. Rooted in relationality and Indigenous ways of knowing, this position contributes to the strength and integrity of ATEP.

✨ We are looking for individuals who bring:
• A Bachelor of Education (or higher)
• Professional teaching certification
• K–12 teaching experience
• A strong understanding of the role of a professional educator and the Teaching Quality Standard
• Lived experience and a grounded understanding of Indigenous perspectives, cultures, and values
• Knowledge of Indigenous protocols, knowledge systems, and practices
• An understanding of Indigenous communities
