For many Métis families, sharing food, gathering with loved ones and passing on traditions are meaningful ways to stay connected. This season offers time to nurture those connections.

We also know Thanksgiving can bring mixed feelings. For some Indigenous people, the holiday brings painful reminders of colonization and the harm it continues to cause our families and communities. Those feelings deserve respect.

However you spend this weekend, we hope you find moments of warmth, comfort and connection with the people who matter to you.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

Today, we honour the memory of the children who never returned home and stand with residential school Survivors, their families and communities.

The harm caused by the residential school system did not end when the schools closed. Its impacts continue to be felt by Survivors, families and communities today.

Reconciliation requires truth. It means listening to Survivors, acknowledging the harms caused by the residential school system and their ongoing impacts, and challenging efforts to deny or minimize that history.

Take time today to listen, learn and reflect on the truths Survivors have fought to have heard.
The Residential School Crisis Line is available 24/7 to Survivors and their families who need support at 1-866-925-4419.

Truth and Reconciliation Week is an opportunity to listen, learn and deepen our understanding of the history and ongoing impacts of the residential school system.

This year’s theme, Taking Truth to Action, encourages us to build on that understanding by carrying what we learn into meaningful action.

Throughout the week, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation is offering free educational programming, including public Lunch & Learn webinars from September 21–25.

Today is Walk a Mile in a Ribbon Skirt Day.

What began as a movement in response to discrimination has grown into a celebration of the strength, leadership and contributions of Indigenous women, matriarchs, Two-Spirit people, families and allies.

Members of our Reaching Home team are wearing their ribbon skirts today and will be joining this evening’s 6th annual celebration and Walk for Reconciliation.

Join us from 5–7 p.m. at Edmonton City Hall, 1 Sir Winston Churchill Square.
