On July 31, 1987 one of the deadliest tornadoes in Canadian history made its way north, through the east end of Edmonton, and western edge of Strathcona County in Alberta. Known locally as Black Friday, it left behind a 40km long path of destruction, countless injuries, and took the lives of 27 people. The aftermath was unlike anything the province had experienced in living memory.
This disaster was also a key event that sparked the formation of Alberta’s K9 SAR community with the founding of the Search and Rescue Dog Association of Alberta (SARDAA). In 1989 Kevin George and a handful of his students formed the original SARDAA team with two Belgian Malinois, two German Shepherds, a Boxer and a Doberman on board. The last of those original dogs retired from active duty in the late 1990s. Many of the K9 SAR teams active in the province today still have connections to that original team.
Today, we remember those lost, reflect on the impact that day had on the city of Edmonton, and appreciate those who have led the way for K9 SAR in the province of Alberta.

Happy Canada Day!
Here are some tips to keep your dog and other pets safe with the fireworks and festivities.
1. Keep your dog away from fire works. If you can’t stay home with them then leave them safely secured inside your home.
2. Update your dog’s ID tags. If your dog happens to get loose, updated information will make it easier to be reunited.
3. Turn on the radio or television to muffle the sound of fireworks.
4. Distract your dog. Play or train with them during the fireworks. A frozen treat or long lasting chew to occupy them may work as well.
5. If your dog’s anxiety is severe, ask your vet for additional support.
