With February coming to a close, we want to give a shout out to our amazing volunteers. Your dedication and hard work do not go unnoticed. Your help is deeply felt and appreciated🩷🤍❤️.

Our Fresh Food February campaign is one way that CFB strives to reach out to members of the campus community to help educate and inform people on our services, and the different ways that people can engage with us. We are so thankful for the work that our team put into running this campaign, and the consistent support everyone provides outside of this.

Tomorrow, March 1st is the finale event of Fresh Food February. Please join us at the Metro Cinema for a screening of Feeding Tomorrow, followed by a guest panel, that will chat about food insecurity, and perspectives on how it can be remedied. For more details, check out the link in our bio🤍🩷

One of the most common questions we receive about our operation is: “Where does all your food come from?” We thought it might be fun to give you a mini tour of how we bring food into our spaces each week...

Four days a week, a pair of CFB volunteers hop into the Student Union’s cargo van and drive across town to Edmonton’s Food Bank. There, the volunteers pick through options available in the EFB warehouse and collect food that our clients will want. Typically, volunteers bring about 500 pounds of food per day back to our food bank. We often send the van to Wholesale Club at the same time to supplement donations with purchased food staples like rice and oats.

One of the CFB staff team drives down to Food Banks Alberta’s warehouse in Leduc monthly to pick up pallets of food. We usually receive two non-perishable pallets of food like canned vegetables, cereal, rice, and snacks, as well as one frozen, perishable pallet of food like chicken, beef, and reheatable meals. Pallet jacks aren’t allowed in SUB so we unpack all pallets in the parking lot and shlep them into our offices on carts.

There are many other sources of food that we receive! We occasionally get donations from large companies like The Little Potato Company, and we often get rescued food donations from the Leftovers Foundation. We have a fruitful annual partnership with Prairie Urban Farm on South Campus; they donated more than 2,000 pounds of produce in 2024. We also purchase food from Costco and Sysco.

As you can see, it is quite a patchwork! We depend a lot on our amazing volunteers to move all this food into the food bank. We currently have more than 130 student and alumni volunteers who help us out every week. Thanks to them, and to all of our sources of donated food, we’re able to distribute more than 5,500 pounds of food each week to our clients.

Thank you for reading. Stay tuned for more information on our Fresh Food February 2025 campaign to raise support for the purchase of fresh produce and protein until spring arrives!
