Join us for our November Film Series at Fort Steele Heritage Town!

This November, we're bringing wartime stories to the big screen in the Wildhorse Theatre as part of our Homefront programming. From powerful adaptations of a First World War classic to gripping Second World War films, there's a story to experience each Sunday evening.

Our November lineup includes:

November 8: All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)

November 15: All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)

November 22: Das Boot

November 29: Fury

It's also a chance to compare two very different adaptations of All Quiet on the Western Front, starting with the modern version before stepping back to the original 1930 classic the following week.

Gates open at 5:30 PM, with popcorn, drinks and cotton candy available throughout the evening. Movies start at 6 PM, and tickets are $8.50 per person.

These screenings are part of our Homefront programming happening throughout November. Follow our page to discover the other activities and events taking place at the Fort this month.

Choose your movie, bring a friend and join us for a night at the movies!

It's officially fall at the Fort! Here's what's open and what's changing for the season.

As the weather cools, we're beginning to tuck some of our historic buildings and spaces in for the winter. This important work helps protect Fort Steele's heritage buildings, delicate displays and historic artifacts from temperature and humidity changes, UV exposure, foot traffic and other elements. Windows are covered, fragile artifacts are carefully packed away, gold panning stations are drained and winterized, and some of our animals are moving into their cozier winter homes.

But don't worry, Fort Steele isn't closing its doors for the season!

There is still plenty to see and do when you visit. Our interpreters are welcoming visitors in select buildings, ready to share stories and show you the projects they're working on. You can catch a film in the Wild Horse Theatre, enjoy a wagon ride or even a sleigh ride when the weather permits, and explore the Fort with one of our guided tours.

With five tours to choose from, you can discover everything from the history of Fort Steele to 19th-century healthcare and the cultural diversity that helped shape our region.

The bakery is open year-round, too, so grab a friend, stop in for a coffee and a treat, and enjoy a wander through our beautiful historic town.

Some heritage buildings will be closed to the public for the winter, while others will remain open or can still be viewed through their windows. Closures depend on the weather and seasonal preservation work, so not everything will be accessible during your visit.

We want to keep the doors open at Fort Steele year-round, and your visits help make that possible. Come spend a day with us this fall and discover that there's still plenty of history to experience at the Fort!

WHAT WAS LIFE LIKE ON THE HOMEFRONT DURING THE WAR?

This November, Fort Steele is exploring the Canadian Homefront and what life was like for the people who stayed home while others went off to war.

From rationing and making do with less to the everyday changes families experienced, there are plenty of stories to discover about how the war affected life right here at home.

Join us throughout November to learn more about this part of our history, explore the challenges people faced and discover how communities came together during wartime.

More details about our November programming coming soon!

WHAT IS IT WEDNESDAY?

Mystery solved!

Did you guess what this week’s mystery object was?

It’s an ornate brass inkstand!

This desk accessory held an ink container in its central section, with two decorative fans at the back that served as a paper holder. Before modern pens and printers, keeping ink and paper organized was an important part of everyday writing.

Imagine using a desk set like this to write letters, keep records, or handle business in Fort Steele!

Did you guess it? Tell us in the comments, and check back next Wednesday for another mystery from the collection!
