Restorative Justice Society at UNB Law

Hello everyone! Thank you again to those who attended and/or spoke at our conference in March. I would like to update you to let you know that the conference has been accredited for 5 continuing professional development hours through the Law Society of New Brunswick.

The UNB Law Restorative Justice Society will be hosting a virtual conference on March 19th, 2022 with the overarching topic of “Restorative Practices”. Restorative practices can work to mend the harmony between communities, victims, offenders, and other affected parties. These practices can benefit parties in nearly any area of the law and should be considered in the initial stages of legal proceedings and dispute resolution.

Danny Graham Q.C.

Over a thirty-year period, Danny Graham has held senior positions in business, law, government and politics.

He is credited with starting the Nova Scotia Restorative Justice Program, when he was a defence lawyer in Halifax in the 1990’s. He was part of the Justice Canada team that ushered in the Youth Criminal Justice Act to replace the Young Offenders Act. He has worked to advance restorative justice with the United Nations and various countries spanning four continents.

For ten years he was Nova Scotia’s Chief Negotiator on Aboriginal Rights in the Made in Nova Scotia Process.

He is currently the Chief Engagement Officer for Engage Nova Scotia. Engage Nova Scotia sits at the intersection of the public, private academic and community sectors. It is leading the Nova Scotia Quality of Life Initiative.

He has been a board member of many organizations including The ONE NS Coalition, the St FX University Board of Governors, and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Public Affairs.

Everett Worthington, Jr. is Commonwealth Professor Emeritus at Virginia Commonwealth University. His research and writing focus on forgiveness and other virtues, religion and spirituality, and issues related to marriage and family.
His mission is to help individuals, couples, families, and even communities and countries to forgive.
Everett’s recent work focuses on how forgiveness relates to justice, faith, and virtue. This interest followed the murder of his mother in 1996 and his journey to forgive the person responsible.
Everett has a PhD and a Master of Arts degrees in Psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia as well as Nuclear Engineering degrees from M.I.T. and the University of Tennessee. He is also the author or co-author of 16 books.

Hello!

Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will occur this Friday, the 17th, at 5:15 PM. We anticipate that the meeting will last no longer than 30 minutes, with 15 minutes at the end for questions. We will be meeting in rooms 2A/B.

At this meeting, we will introduce the society and the executive, go over our goals for the year, expectations for members, how to become a trained facilitator, and sub-committee membership. Moreover, we will discuss applications for the open position of programming sub-committee lead.

This meeting is open to all law students, whether they signed up at clubs day or not. All are welcome and encouraged to attend!

We are looking forward to an exciting year of advocating for and facilitating restorative justice forums in New Brunswick.
