❄️🪣 Our community sandbox is open for the 2026-27 winter season!

Residents can pick up free sand at the City Service Centre (9505 112 Street) to help improve traction on icy sidewalks and driveways.

A few things to know before you go:
•Bring your own shovel and buckets.
•Take only what you need, up to two five-gallon containers per visit.
•Sand is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The sandbox is replenished throughout the season, but may not always be full.

🎃 As Halloween approaches, the Grande Prairie Police Service is reminding residents to take a few simple precautions to help keep children and families safe while trick-or-treating.

With more pedestrians on neighbourhood streets, drivers are encouraged to slow down, stay alert and watch for children. Parents and caregivers can also help by reviewing road safety rules and making sure costumes are visible after dark.

Please take a moment to review and share these important Halloween safety reminders.

Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable Halloween!

As families prepare for Halloween festivities, the Grande Prairie Police Service is reminding residents to take a few simple steps to help keep children safe while trick-or-treating.

"Halloween is an exciting night for children and families, but it can also mean more pedestrians, heavier traffic, and reduced visibility," says GPPS Community Engagement Constable Mir Lodhi. "A little planning can go a long way toward helping everyone enjoy a safe and fun evening."

For parents and caregivers:
• Accompany young children while trick-or-treating.
• If older children are going out with friends, agree on a route, check-in plan, and return time.
• Make sure costumes allow children to see clearly and walk safely.
• Add reflective materials or carry flashlights to improve visibility.
• Review road safety rules and use designated crossings whenever possible.
• Inspect treats before children eat them and discard anything that appears opened, damaged, or suspicious.

For trick-or-treaters:
• Stay with your parent, caregiver, or agreed group.
• Walk, don't run, and watch for vehicles when crossing roads.
• Only visit well-lit homes and remain outside when collecting treats.
• Never enter a stranger's home or vehicle.
• Wait until treats have been checked by a trusted adult before eating them.

For drivers:
• Slow down and watch for children, especially near intersections, driveways, and parked vehicles.
• Expect the unexpected, as excited children may enter the roadway suddenly.
• Eliminate distractions and remain alert throughout the evening.
• Never drive while impaired.

Residents handing out treats can also help by turning on exterior lights and keeping walkways clear of potential tripping hazards.

Have a safe and enjoyable Halloween, Grande Prairie.

For an emergency or immediate danger, call 911.

Congratulations to Leigh Goldie for winning the Alberta Recreation & Parks Association (ARPA) Outstanding Community Volunteer Award this past weekend. This award recognizes Leigh’s ability to inspire others to increase participation in active living, recreation and parks.

At the same event, the City of Grande Prairie accepted the ARPA Inclusion Award for our commitment to making recreation more welcoming and accessible for residents of all abilities and backgrounds.

We know that building an inclusive community takes ongoing effort, and this recognition reflects the importance of continuing to reduce barriers and create opportunities for everyone to enjoy the benefits of recreation.

We’re committed to building a more inclusive community through initiatives like our Fair Access Policy, building accessible playgrounds and creating more opportunity for activities. Hosting the 2025 Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games was another important step in creating opportunities for everyone to participate and connect.

This award is a meaningful recognition of the work the City is doing to ensure recreation in Grande Prairie is accessible, inclusive and open to all.

Congratulations again, Leigh, and thank you for your dedication to the wellbeing of our community.
