October is Mi’kmaw History Month!

The theme for 2026 celebrates "lifelong healing journeys,” inviting people across Mi’kma’kik to reflect on healing as a lifelong journey—one rooted in understanding ourselves, our histories, our relationships, and our connectedness to one another.

The heart of this year’s theme comes from teachings shared by the late Elder Murdena Marshall, whose guidance continues to shape cultural learning across Mi’kma’kik.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day are both observed annually on September 30th, and are dedicated to honouring Residential School Survivors, their families, and communities, and recognizing the lasting impacts of Canada’s Residential School system.

These commemorations provide an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the intergenerational effects of residential schools and to reflect on their enduring legacy as part of the ongoing journey toward truth, healing, and reconciliation.
