Congrats to our Dalhousie University School of Social Work grads crossing the stage this afternoon at fall convocation. Three years after Dal launched Canada’s first-ever Black and African Nova Scotian social work cohort, its students (a full cohort of 36!) are graduating and ready to bring culturally responsive care to communities across the province. Cohort members and some of their second-year mentors, including The honourable Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard, are pictured at the Delmore Buddy Daye Learning Institute.

A decade of leadership, advocacy, community and impact.

Last evening, community members, leaders, partners and friends gathered at the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia to celebrate Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard’s 10 years of service in the Senate of Canada.

The evening created space to reflect on the progress that has been made, the work that continues, and the importance of Black women’s leadership across generations.

Through conversations centred on leadership, inclusion, critical hope, joy and healing, we were reminded that meaningful change is built through community, connection and a commitment to those coming behind us.

The gathering also recognized International Day of the Girl Child, creating an opportunity to honour the voices, leadership and possibilities of the next generation.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, contributed to the conversation and helped make the evening meaningful.

Congratulations to Senator Bernard on an incredible milestone and a decade of continued service. ❤️

Big congratulations to Russell Grosse on this well-deserved honour. 👏🏾

His continued commitment to preserving and sharing Black history, culture, and community has made a lasting impact across Nova Scotia.

Congratulations on receiving an Honorary Doctor of Civil Laws from the University of King’s College.

We the staff and board of the Black Cultural Centre/Society for Nova Scotia are so pleased to extend a heartfelt congratulations to our CEO, Russell Grosse, who is set to receive an honourary Doctor of Civil Laws from the University of King's College, Halifax at the upcoming invocation of their 26th President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Timothy Vine.

This honour recognizes Russell's ongoing and tireless commitment to sharing and preserving Black Canadian history and culture, and the conferral of this degree is particularly meaningful, given that he has been instrumental in building a partnership between the university and the Black Cultural Centre, with a shared goal of making King's a more welcoming place for Black students, staff, and faculty. His passion and dedication to the community is inspirational to us all, and we couldn't be more proud to see him receive this well-deserved honour. Congrats, Russell!

King's will also be awarding an honourary Doctor of Civil Laws to renowned writer and journalist, Inglis Professor Stephen Kimber, who spent decades training the next generation of storytellers at King's, and whose work has left an indelible impact on the university. We want to congratulate Prof. Kimber on this honour, as well.

Please note that we will be closing the Centre at 1:00pm tomorrow, October 7th, so that the BCCNS team can attend the invocation and cheer Russell on. 🙂

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the families and communities who continue to carry the impacts of the residential school system.

Truth and reconciliation require more than reflection on September 30. They require continued learning, listening, respect, accountability, and action.

Listen. Learn. Remember. Act. 🧡

Ways to carry that responsibility forward:

• Listen to and learn from Indigenous voices and Survivors.
• Learn more about the history and lasting impacts of residential schools.
• Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action and consider where you can take action.
• Support Indigenous-led organizations, businesses, artists, educators, and community initiatives.
• Learn about the Indigenous communities, histories, languages, and treaties connected to the land where you live.

Reconciliation is ongoing. What we learn today should shape how we show up tomorrow and beyond.
