Mission Services of Hamilton Restoring hope and empowering people to find their way forward. We envision a resilient and healthy community that is compassionate, equitable and hopeful.

More than a meal, we are a non-profit, multi-social service agency who believes every person deserves access to healthy food, safe housing, and opportunities for tomorrow. In 1956, Enos Bearinger, a farmer in Hamilton, helped to rehabilitate a young man in his home. This experience encouraged him to create a place where men experiencing homelessness, addiction, and mental illness could access food, shelter, and social and emotional support. He sold his farm and used the profits to purchase an old candy factory on James Street North. With the assistance of volunteers and local congregations, the old factory became our Men’s Shelter, where men experiencing homelessness could share a meal, have a place to sleep, and access community supports. This building remains the location of our men’s emergency shelter, where we continue to offer services to men aged 18 and older. As Mission Services grew it became apparent that a more comprehensive scope of services was needed to help break the cycle of homelessness, poverty and other problems. Today, our services include emergency food assistance, Inasmuch House shelter for women and children fleeing violence, addiction services, youth afterschool programs, and Willow's Place, a low-barrier daytime resource hub for women experiencing homelessness. These services focus not only on crisis response and intervention but also on helping people realize their full potential. Mission Services is a registered Canadian charity ( #11904 3206 RR0001).

We held our first-ever Trunk or Treat event on Friday!

We welcomed families from our community and provided the opportunity for them to collect candy and treats in a safe and accessible environment. Each department at Mission Services created a different themed trunk for the kids to visit, and many dressed up in costumes themselves to join in on the fun. We were thrilled to be joined by several community partners who also participated, bringing the community together for spook-tacular time! 🎃

One of our favourite group costumes was our Child and Youth Program team (Slide 12)! Share your guess for what they dressed up as in the comments! ⬇️

For the past eight years, Shannon has been a consistent presence in the kitchen at our Men’s Shelter. As each resident arrives for meal time, she greets them by name and knows their food preferences. It’s her special way of showing that she cares.

“When people think of the caring staff at a shelter, they usually think of the case workers. We in the kitchen can also show that we care not just by cooking good food, but by being a friendly and welcoming face they see each day.”

Having experienced homelessness earlier in her life, Shannon finds that she can relate to the residents in a unique way.

“I know a bit of what they’re going through, so I try to make things special for the guys. I put my heart into everything that I do, but baking is my specialty.”

“Every once in a while, I will get creative and make something new and different to help make their day exciting. I love hearing their feedback when something I make is a big hit.”

Those thoughtful touches are a big part of how Shannon helps make the residents’ time in shelter a bit more comfortable.

“Putting care into the food you’re cooking is a great way to show the people eating it that you care about them.”

Our Thanksgiving meals this year were a special time of community, and it was made possible by you! More than just a hot meal, they were an opportunity to come together, reflect on what we are thankful for, and to encourage those around us.

It's important to take the time to learn what others are going through and let them know that they are not alone on their journey of life. Sometimes all it takes to lift someone's spirits and brighten their day is a warm smile, learning their name, and offering them hope for the future.

On behalf of the men, women, and children that we served this Thanksgiving, and all of us here at Mission Services, we are so thankful for everyone who had a part in making our Thanksgiving meals possible. We're so grateful for your generosity and kindness!

Thank you for going above and beyond to serve up hope and support our community!
