Special Areas is a unique rural municipal area covering approximately 2.1 million hectares in southeastern Alberta.

The Special Areas Board provides municipal services and public land management. Special Areas Board (SAB) social media pages are for communication of programs, services, news and events to keep residents informed. SAB social media is not monitored outside of regular business hours. Direct messages and posts are not considered official correspondence. All comments will be regularly moderated and reviewed by SAB communication staff. The Special Areas Board will not tolerate or respond to comments that are offensive to, or violate the privacy of, an individual or an organization, or comments that are rude in tone, or abusive as determined by SAB. Users comment at their own risk, taking personal responsibility for comments, username and any information provided. If SAB Communication staff find that a comment or post contravenes any of these guidelines, staff will make a copy of the comment for the record and delete or hide the comment/post from SAB’s page. If the user continues to contravene any of the guidelines they shall be blocked from SAB social media pages.

🌿 Hunting in Community Pastures🌿

🌾When enjoying public access to Community Pastures, please respect the land, livestock, wildlife, and any Species at Risk. Hunters must avoid disturbing animals and help protect these important areas.

🔗To gain access to a community pasture, first fill out the form available at: https://portal.laserfiche.ca/u2921/forms/RecAccess

👍Requests will be reviewed and you will receive an email stating if access is granted or denied.
You are not permitted to access the community pasture until you have received permission via email.

✅ Access may be restricted or denied due to livestock presence, fire bans, sensitive wildlife habitat, camping plans, or activities that do not align with pasture management rules.

TELUS Service Interruption Notice - LANDLINES only

TELUS will be upgrading telecommunications equipment on October 28, 2026 at 11:01pm, to October 29, 2026 at 6:01am in the communities of Cereal, Consort, Craigmyle, Delia, Gadsby, Halkirk, Hanna, Oyen, and Youngstown.

During this time, customers with landline telephone service in the affected area codes (403, 825) - 326, 364, 396, 574, 577, 664, 665, 779, 854, 857, and 884 will experience a temporary loss of service.

Landline services that will be unavailable during the outage:
• Local calling from a landline
• Incoming and outgoing long-distance calling
• Calls between landlines and cell phones
• Access to 911 from a landline
• Access to local 10-digit emergency numbers

Please note that some local and emergency numbers may also be unreachable due to network conditions, such as call forwarding to exchanges outside the affected area.

👋Earlier this week, we said farewell to our Special Area No. 2 Agricultural Fieldman, Jesse Williams.

🗨️We caught up with Jesse before she left and asked her to reflect on her time here, and this is what she had to say.
"I want to thank the farmers, ranchers, and community members who welcomed me onto their operations, shared their knowledge, and trusted me to support the work they do. It has been a privilege to serve a region built by hardworking people who care deeply about agriculture and their communities.
As I think back on the my time here, it has truly been the ratepayers that have made my time in this role so rewarding. I have never experienced such innovative, determined and resilient producers as I have here working alongside all of you. As I leave, my hope is that Special Areas continues to champion the success of our producers and create opportunities for the next generation of farmers and ranchers to thrive in the best kept secret in southern Alberta. "

⚠️ Extremely dry conditions exist throughout the Special Areas, which means you need to use extreme caution this hunting season.

☎️Always contact landowners & leaseholders before entering private or public lands.

🥾Use foot access - instead of driving - when possible.
🧯Have a fully charged water extinguisher.
🚭Reduce the risk of grass fires by not smoking.
⛔Do not drive in grassy or vegetated areas.

🛣️ ? From October 16 to April 15, highway maintenance is managed by Alberta Transportation. This includes things like snowplowing, sanding, and other maintenance. Local roads are managed by Special Areas Transportation Services.

Flags at all Special Areas facilities have been lowered to half-mast to mark the tragedy at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on October 17, 2026.

We recognize the service, dedication and sacrifice of the Canadian Armed Forces members who lost their lives and extend our sincere condolences to their families, friends and fellow service members. We also extend our thoughts to those injured and wish them strength in their recovery.

Wildfire Update #4 - 9:55PM

The fire near Lanfine is controlled, crews are still on scene to monitor flare ups overnight. Continue to avoid this area so crews have room to work.

Highways are now open, visibility is improving and safe for travels.

No further updates will be provided tonight.
