Voting opens tomorrow morning. Are you ready to vote? You should have received your 2026 Municipal and School Board Elections letter with your PIN number by now. If you haven't received it, please go to a Municipal Service Centre or City Hall and bring ID that shows your name and registered Kawartha Lakes address. You can also register online at kawarthalakes.ca/election.

I heard from many people as I went door-to-door that they did not have reliable internet, a computer or phone with data, or just plain were uncomfortable with the idea of online voting. The good news is you can receive help at City Hall in Lindsay, the municipal service centres in Bobcaygeon, Coboconk and Omemee and at the library branches in Bethany, Dalton, Fenelon Falls, Kinmount, Kirkfield, Lindsay, Little Britain, and Woodville. PLEASE call to confirm hours before you go to any location. The folks there are prepared to help you vote. Make sure you bring your PIN number.

Democracy dies in darkness. Please exercise your right to vote and keep our democracy healthy and thriving.

October 2 was the Ridgewood PS annual Terry Fox Run held at the Kinmount Fairgrounds. What a great setting, and so many trails/tracks for the kids to choose from. The weather co-operated and the day was beautiful. Thank you to the community involvement that makes this possible every year, and to the parents who come out to run/walk/talk with students and staff. A true community event.

October 1 was a busy day. Mariposa ES had their Meet-the-Teacher evening, followed by Woodville ES. It took a bit of doing but I managed to stop in at both! Again, many familiar faces but an equal number of new ones. The dust is settling now for everyone and we are on to a great school year.

One month under our belts, and lots going on already. The kick-off was Lady Mackenzie's Meet-the-Teacher bbq in September. What a great turnout (as always!). Lots of familiar faces, but many new ones as well. It was great to see that things were already rolling at the school. The only unfortunate part was it meant I missed Ridgewood's Fall Y'All bbq due to scheduling conflicts. Great start to what I know will be a great year.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to attend the All Candidates Meeting in Coboconk on Sept 28. I was pleased to be able to speak to so many of you (although Trustees were not given an opportunity to speak to the group) and to see the number of people who want to be informed prior to the election. Making your opinions known is what counts. A thank you to the organizers as well who made this happen.

What does a Trustee do? The honest answer is “a lot less than they were able to do 20 or even 10 years ago”, and the reason is the Provincial Government. They have chipped away at Trustee responsibilities and prohibit any involvement in operational issues. However, I am running again because I believe I can still make a contribution. I can have input into policies and limited input into budget. I can help people navigate the system when there is an issue, putting them in touch with the appropriate operational person and adding my voice to their input. Unfortunately I cannot overturn an operational decision and this can be very frustrating for all involved. I can celebrate the achievements of students and staff and bring them to the attention of the greater community. I am passionate about students and public education and I am passionate about your voice in local government. I would like to be your voice at the school board table for the next 4 years. Feel free to DM me if you would like more information.

We are in another election year. For those who don't already know me, I am the current Trustee for the Trillium Lakelands DSB for Wards 1 and 4 in the City of Kawartha Lakes. I was a special education teacher with TLDSB for 22 years before retiring and in 2022 immediately running for Trustee. I did it then, and I am doing it now, not because I have time on my hands and not a lot to do, but because I believe I can make a positive contribution in my community. There are many responsibilities associated to being a Trustee, and I will explore them one by one in a series of posts. Instilling public confidence in the school board is one responsibility and I think I have done that right here on Facebook by celebrating the terrific things that are happening in our schools. Take a look at my posts. I have attended every school in my area multiple times a year to celebrate achievements, meet students and their parents/guardians, and interact with staff. I hope to continue to be the Trustee for Wards 1 &4 in Trillium Lakelands DSB - but to do that I need your vote!

Well, we’ve kicked off another school year and things are underway. I hope everyone has a look at our website - TLDSB.ca-for information and answers to some of the most common questions. You can also access the school year calendar there. It’s great to see so many excited, happy faces and I’m looking forward to seeing many of you in person at the meet-the-teacher BBQs at your school. Welcome back students and staff - here’s to a great year!

A HUGE shout out to the organizers of the Kirkfield Family Festival this past Saturday. the event was well organized, well attended and well run. It was great to see cars from all over our area on display to see the kids having fun in the children's area, and to have the opportunity to talk to so many of our community members. And I must say - who did you pay to have the weather co-operate so spectacularly? It was a great day all around. I know a LOT of work is involved and I know it was appreciated by everyone who attended. Thanks for all you do.

I just want to thank Dianne Smith and all of the others on the North Bay Drive Association committee for holding an all-candidates meeting along with their AGM on Saturday. It was great to see so many attend and to be able to talk to and answer questions from interested parties. Hope to see many of you again as I knock on doors. And remember - VOTE!
