May marks Sexual Violence Prevention Month, a time to strengthen collective efforts to prevent sexual violence, support survivors, and recognize the ongoing work across the GBV sector. As the month draws to a close, we’re sharing key insights from the sector, research, and organizations leading this work.

While anyone can experience sexual violence, research and sector advocacy continue to show how social and systemic inequities shape who is most impacted and who faces barriers to support, safety, and justice, including Indigenous communities, 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, and people with disabilities.

Addressing sexual violence requires centering diverse voices and drawing on decolonial, disability-inclusive practices, and community-based approaches – ways of working that expand how we understand consent, education, and prevention, and help create pathways toward meaningful and lasting change.

Across Canada, sexual violence organizations play an important leadership role in survivor support, advocacy, education and prevention efforts, including the Ontario Coalition of r**e Crisis Centres (OCRCC - Sexual Assault Support) Ending Sexual Violence Association of Canada, and many others working at the local, regional and national level.

To support this work, we gathered a collection of resources that explore sexual violence prevention, center diverse voices, and offer practical tools.

On April 28, 2026, Lisa Heslop, Kim Harris and Katreena Scott discussed the importance of screening for family violence (FV) to keep parents who have experienced FV and their children safer.

This webinar also introduced a new online assessment guide called the e-SAFeR that is designed to help family law professionals create parenting plan recommendations that account for FV and forefront the safety of those who experienced it.

From 2022 to 2026, the Knowledge Hub facilitated a Community of Practice (CoP) of 48 researchers and practitioners from 24 projects across Canada to strengthen trauma- and violence-informed approaches to gender-based and family violence (GBFV) prevention. The CoP projects’ work resulted in lasting impact:

✔️ Organizational and system level change
✔️ Enhanced system-level understanding and application of trauma-and violence-informed research and practice

Together, our CoP showed what’s possible when we learn, reflect, and act collectively.

Lasting change doesn’t come from short-term funding—it comes from what endures.

In the Knowledge Hub’s Sustainability Report, we explore what it takes to sustain trauma- and violence-informed responses to gender-based and family violence (GBFV) beyond initial grants and external support.

The report outlines four connected domains of sustainability, each rooted in the need for stable, long-term funding that supports ongoing delivery and data-informed adaptation. Recommendations are provided related to fostering systemic change towards sustainable funding of effective public health initiatives and to working within current funding systems.
