🌿 FTV Spotlight | Lakeview Elementary

We’re excited to launch our Following Their Voices Spotlights, celebrating the learning and connections happening through FTV across our schools!

First up is Lakeview Elementary School

At Lakeview Elementary, Following Their Voices (FTV) is helping us create meaningful opportunities for students to connect with Indigenous culture, language, Elders, and the land. One of our goals is to ensure that all students participate in culturally relevant activities and land-based learning experiences. This month, every student at Lakeview had the opportunity to take part in learning that brought this goal to life!

Our Kindergarten and Grade 1 students explored northern animals by identifying animal tracks and learning the names of northern animals in Michif. Grade 2 students participated in a special buffalo field trip with Elder Gary Gorst, where they observed buffalo, learned about the traditional buffalo hunt, and took part in a traditional Indigenous buffalo hunt game. Elder Elaine also visited Lakeview to share her knowledge about the Métis core value of respect, represented by the buffalo.

Meanwhile, our Grade 3 and 4 students learned about the Migrating Moon and the seasonal movements of ducks and geese at Goose Haven, deepening their understanding of the land and the natural world around them.

These experiences provide students with opportunities to learn through stories, language, observation, and hands-on activities while building connections to Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and the land. We are proud to see Following Their Voices supporting learning experiences that are meaningful, engaging, and culturally relevant for students across all grade levels at Lakeview Elementary.

📌 AP Spotlight | Severe Weather
Throughout the year, we’ll be highlighting Northwest School Division Administrative Procedures that are particularly relevant to our students and families.

First up: ❄️ AP 133: Severe Weather.

As winter approaches, families should know that bus transportation may be cancelled due to extreme cold, severe weather or unsafe road conditions. Buses will not run when temperatures reach-40°C or colder, while schools remain open even when buses are cancelled. Families can also make their own decision about sending their children to school during inclement weather.
