โ ๏ธ Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week: Know the Signs โ ๏ธ
๐จ Could it be carbon monoxide (CO)? Carbon monoxide is known as the "silent killer" because you can't see, smell, or taste it. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of CO poisoning could save your life.
Signs of acute CO poisoning include:
๐น Headaches
๐น Dizziness
๐น Nausea or vomiting
๐น Shortness of breath
๐น Weakness or fatigue
๐น Loss of consciousness or collapsing
Signs of chronic CO exposure may include:
๐น Frequent, unexplained illnesses
๐น Behaviour or mood changes
๐น Symptoms that improve when you leave the building and return when you come back
๐น Difficulty concentrating or ongoing fatigue
๐น Long-term damage to the heart, lungs, or brain
โ ๏ธ A warning sign: If multiple people or pets in your home experience these symptoms at the same time, carbon monoxide could be the cause.
โ
Install carbon monoxide alarms outside all sleeping areas and on every level of your home.
โ
Test alarms monthly, replace batteries annually and replace devices as per the manufacturers instructions.
โ
Have fuel-burning appliances inspected and maintained regularly.
โ
Never ignore a sounding CO alarm.
If your CO alarm activates or you suspect carbon monoxide exposure, move to fresh air immediately, call 9-1-1, and do not re-enter the building until it has been declared safe.
