Édifice Kander Building

McCord (actuellement rue de la Montagne). C’était le site du siège social de la LRH&LC (Hanna, 2007, p. 97) et aussi, selon l’annuaire alphabétique de 1899-1900, du bureau de distribution. Le bureau du directeur des services électriques était situé au 38, Square Victoria (Souvenir, 1904, p. 78). Fondée en 1894 et inaugurée en 1897, cette compagnie était à son époque la deuxième plus importante après la Niagara Falls Hydraulic Power & Manufacturing Company. En 1903, la LRH&LC fut rachetée par la Montreal, Light, Heat and Power Company (MLH&P) (Bilan du Siècle) qui, en 1944, fut elle-même expropriée et absorbée par la Commission hydroélectrique du Québec, une société provinciale nouvellement formée (Hydro-Québec, 1996-2011). Au-dessus du bas-relief, la façade affiche également le nom Kander, peint en noir et blanc. La Kander Paper Stock Company Ltd apparaît d’abord au 160 de la rue McCord dans le répertoire Lovell de 1927-1928, puis au 300 de la rue McCord dans celui de 1928-1929. On remarquera que dans l’édition de 1928-1929 les adresses aux numéros pairs correspondant au 140 et au 188 de la rue McCord, soit l’immeuble situé entre les rues Ottawa et Seminary, ont disparu et ont été remplacées par les numéros 240 et 300. Bien que l’on ait conclu que l’immeuble a été construit en 1920 et que le bas-relief de la LRH&LC a été extrait d’un immeuble existant auparavant (Maître d’oeuvre de l’histoire inc., 2006, p. 141-143), David Hanna (2011) affirme que la date de la construction est 1896, et la comparaison des noms qui correspondent à l’immeuble dans les éditions du Lovell de 1927- 1928 et de 1928-1929 semble confirmer cette affirmation. Par exemple, dans l’édition de 1927-1928, Miss Mary Griffin habite au 149 de la rue McCord, Frank Wilcox au 151 et J. Griffin habite au 261 de la rue McCord, Wilcox au 263 et Vanloo au 265. Quoi qu’il en soit, cet immeuble a fait l’objet d’importantes rénovations ces dernières années et abrite actuellement le siège social de Magenta Photo Studio. This two story red brick building is remarkably situated on the forked segment of Mountain Street and visible from all angles. It has a bas-relief sign on its truncated façade which says: “Lachine Rapids Hydraulic and Land Co. 1896”. The Lachine Rapids Hydraulic and Land Company (LRH&LC) is listed in the Lovell’s 1898-1899 Street Directory at 160 McCord Street (presently Mountain Street). This was the site of LRH&LC’s head office (Hanna, 2007 p. 97) and also, according to the Lovell’s 1899-1900 Alphabetical Directory, the distributing station; the electrical superintendent’s office was at 38 Victoria Square (Souvenir, 1904 p. 78). Founded in 1894 and inaugurated in 1897, this company, in its day, was second in importance only to the Niagara Falls Hydraulic Power & Manufacturing Company. In 1903, LRH&LC was bought by the Montreal, Light, Heat and Power Company (MLH&P) (Bilan du Siècle) which, in 1944, would itself be expropriated and absorbed by the Québec Hydro-Electric Commission, a newly formed provincial corporation (Hydro-Québec, 1996-2011). Above the bas-relief, the facade also boasts the Kander name painted in black and white. The Kander Paper Stock Company Ltd first appears at 160 McCord in the 1927-1928 Lovell’s Directory but shows up in the 1928-1929 Lovell’s Directory at 300 McCord. It is notable that in the 1928-1929 edition the even-numbered addresses between 140 and 188 McCord, the block between Ottawa and Seminary streets disappear and are replaced with even-numbered addresses between 240 and 300. Although it has been suggested that the building may have been built in the 1920s and the LRH&LC bas-relief taken from a previously existing building (Maître d’oeuvre de l’histoire, 2006 p. 141 - 143), David Hanna (2011) confirms the 1896 construction date and a comparison of names which appear on the block in both the 1927-1928 and 1928-1929 editions of Lovell’s would seem support his assertion; for example, in the 1927-1928 edition, Miss Mary Griffin is at 149 McCord, Frank Wilcox at 151, and J. Vanloo at 153, while in the 1928-1929 edition, Miss M. Griffin is at 261 McCord, Wilcox is at 263, and Vanloo is at 265. The building has undergone significant restoration and renovation in recent years and currently houses the head office of Magenta Photo Studios.
