The Armenian Missionary Association of Canada (AMAC) and SOAR Montreal were pleased to host a well-attended and engaging health seminar entitled “Living a Healthier, Happier Life” on Friday evening, May 8, at the First Armenian Evangelical Church in Montreal.

Harout Nercessian served as the emcee and welcomed the audience. Rev. George Dabbo offered the opening prayer, which was beautifully enhanced by a sharagan performed by Vanda Hovagimian Aintablian, accompanied on the keyboard by Liza Albarian.

Harout Nercessian also presented brief overviews of the ministries and mission of both AMAC and SOAR before introducing the evening’s speaker, distinguished surgeon Dr. Sarkis Yeretsian.

Dr. Yeretsian is a Québec-based general surgeon who received his medical degree from St. Joseph University in Beirut and specialized in General Surgery at the University of Sherbrooke. Internationally recognized for pioneering laparoscopic surgery in Armenia, he established the country’s first advanced laparoscopic center and performed the region’s first laparoscopic colectomy. He has also contributed patented innovations in anorectal surgery. Most recently, two of his medical research projects — Pain-Free Post Hemorrhoidectomy and Non-Surgical Treatment of Complex Anorectal Vaginal Fistulas — were accepted for presentation at the upcoming Disease Symposium of Washington University in Washington, DC. In addition to his distinguished medical career, Dr. Yeretsian serves as President of SOAR Montreal, he combines clinical expertise with humanitarian leadership.

Using informative slides and practical examples, Dr. Yeretsian spoke about lifestyle habits that negatively affect health and explained their impact on the body’s biodome and various organs. He also shared encouraging insights on how damaging habits can be reversed through healthier choices and disciplined living. Throughout the seminar, he emphasized the importance of adopting habits that promote long-term physical and emotional well-being.

The audience responded with great interest, asking numerous thoughtful questions during the Q&A session, which unfortunately had to be shortened due to time limitations. Even during the refreshment period, many attendees gathered around Dr. Yeretsian to continue the discussion and seek additional advice.

Many participants also signed up to receive the seminar notes prepared from Dr. Yeretsian’s presentation.

At the conclusion of the evening, AMAC President Ruth Demirjian Duench and Harout Nercessian, AMAA Representative in Canada, expressed their appreciation to Dr. Yeretsian and presented him with several gifts, including an AMAA cap and t-shirt.

AMAC and SOAR Montreal are grateful to everyone who attended and helped make this educational and meaningful community event a success.

On April 22, 2026, the Armenian Missionary Association of Canada (AMAC) organized a public lecture in Laval at the Armenian Evangelical Church of Montreal, as part of the community’s commemoration of the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The evening featured Rev. René Léonian—historian, author, theologian, and lecturer—who delivered a thoughtful and insightful presentation as a community service offered by AMAC.

The program was emceed by Harout Nercessian, AMAC Board Member, AMAA Representative in Canada, and Global Field Director.

The evening opened with prayer led by Rev. Mardiros Eglencyan, Pastor of the Armenian Evangelical Church of Montreal.

The program also included two cultural performances that added a deeply meaningful artistic dimension to the commemoration:
 Antranik Poshoglian performed “Սարերի Հովին մեռնեմ” (Sareri Hovin Mernem) on the duduk.
 Shooshanig Melkonian presented a powerful poetic medley entitled “ՊԱՏԳԱՄ ԿՈՉԵՄ ԱՊՐՈՂԱԾ” (Badgam Kochem Aprovats), curated by herself, featuring works by Vahan Tekeyan, Paruyr Sevak, Zhak Hagopian, and Hovhannes Shiraz. The medley reflected on the tragedy of the Armenian Genocide, with Antranik Poshoglian accompanying her on the duduk.

Rev. Dr. René Léonian, Chair of Armenology at the Catholic University of Lyon and holder of a Doctorate in Theology from the Catholic University of Lyon, delivered the keynote lecture. His academic and pastoral work spans teaching, research, and lecturing on Armenian history, theology, and the Armenian Evangelical Church across Europe, Armenia, and beyond.
His lecture was based on his recent publication ARMÉNIE : 3000 ans d’histoire – Terre Chrétienne Hier et Aujourd’hui – Importance du rôle des églises arméniennes. He explored Armenia’s 3000-year journey, emphasizing the enduring strength of its Christian identity and the vital role of the Armenian Church in shaping the nation’s spiritual life, cultural heritage, and resilience through centuries of challenge and renewal.
In his concluding remarks, Rev. Léonian emphasized that we must draw lessons from the past and look toward the future with hope, while also underscoring the importance of Armenian unity in facing national challenges and reaffirming the central and essential role the Armenian Church must continue to play in the life, identity, and future of the Armenian people.

A question-and-answer period followed the presentation, allowing participants to engage directly with the speaker.

The evening concluded with prayer offered by Rev. George Dabbo, Pastor of the First Armenian Evangelical Church of Montreal.

Following the formal program, attendees continued conversations over refreshments, with many taking the opportunity to speak further with Rev. Léonian.

It was a meaningful evening of remembrance, learning, and reflection—honoring the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide while reaffirming Armenian Christian identity, unity, and hope for the future.

Հայոց Ցեղասպանութեան 111-րդ տարելիցին առիթով, Գանատայի Հայ Աւետարանչական Ընկերակցութիւնը (AMAC) կոչ կ՛ընէ Գանատայի եւ ամբողջ աշխարհի հայերուն՝ ակնածանքով եւ նպատակասլացութեամբ յիշելու այս աննկարագրելի վայրագութիւններուն զոհերը։

Մենք անոնց յիշատակը կը պատուենք ոչ միայն յիշելով, այլ նաեւ գործով՝ սիրելով զիրար, պահպանելով միմիանց արժանապատուութիւնն ու յարգելով զիրար եւ զօրացնելով մեր համայնքները։ Միայն միասնութեանբ եւ համատեղ նուիրուածութեամբ մենք կրնանք կառուցել հզօր ազգ մը՝ ազգ մը, որ ամուր կը կանգնի, կը կերտէ իր ապագան եւ կ’երաշխաւորէ որ նման ոճիրներ այլեւս երբեք չեն կրկնուիր։

On this 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the Armenian Missionary Association of Canada (AMAC) calls on Armenians across Canada and throughout the world to remember the victims of these unspeakable atrocities with reverence and purpose.

We honor their memory not only through remembrance, but through action—by loving one another, upholding each another’s dignity, respecting each other, and strengthening our communities. In unity and shared commitment, we can build a formidable nation—one that stands firm, safeguards its future, and ensures that such barbarities are never repeated.
