Huge congratulations to Jacob on the publication of this powerful opinion piece. Clear, principled, and timely — you didn’t just make the case, you drove it home. This is exactly the kind of voice we need more of right now. 👏

"WE NEED TO STOP PRETENDING THAT ICE IS A POLICE FORCE.
- POLICE FORCES RESPECT THE LAW.
- POLICE FORCES DO NOT HAVE IMMUNITY.
- POLICE FORCES OBTAIN JUDICIAL WARRANTS BEFORE ENTERING PEOPLE’S HOMES.
- POLICE FORCES DO NOT HIDE THEIR FACES.
- THEY IDENTIFY -THEMSELVES.
- POLICE FORCES RESPECT COURT ORDERS.
NONE OF THE SIX THINGS I JUST LISTED ARE BEING FOLLOWED BY ICE!"
Frédéric Bérard's words cut to the heart of a truth too many people are afraid to say: we cannot call something “police” when it behaves in ways that undermine the very principles police are supposed to uphold. A genuine law-enforcement agency respects the law — every part of it. It operates transparently, it follows judicial oversight, and it answers to the courts and to the public it serves. That’s not just a nice idea — that’s the foundation of a democratic society where rights matter and where the people are protected.
When we say that ICE does not meet those standards — that it operates with immunity instead of accountability, that it bypasses warrants instead of securing them, that it hides identities instead of revealing them, and that it ignores judicial orders instead of respecting them — we are not engaging in hyperbole or rhetoric. We are stating observable facts about how power is being exercised, and we are insisting that power be held to the same rules as everyone else.
Supporting this truth is not about politics alone — it’s about principle. It’s about insisting that the institutions with the authority to intrude on people’s lives must first demonstrate respect for the rule of law. It’s about defending our communities, our neighbours, and the dignity of every person, regardless of immigration status.
To stand with Frédéric Bérard in this moment is to stand for the law as it should be — transparent, accountable, and grounded in justice. It is to call for consistency between authority and accountability, and to demand nothing less than what justice itself requires.

Last night, in the wake of tragedy, Minnesota voters came together to end the Republican majority in the Minnesota House, electing Democrats Shelley Buck in District 47A and Meg Luger-Nikolai in District 64A.

Powerful. Grounded. Human.
We want to extend our deepest congratulations to Michael Lipset for an outstanding interview on CBC Montréal this week.
Speaking with clarity, heart, and lived experience, Michael shared what it means to watch his hometown of Minneapolis once again become a flashpoint for resistance — and why, from Montréal, he felt compelled to step up and help organize a solidarity action here at home.
This Sunday, in front of the U.S. Consulate in Montréal, Michael will be speaking not as a pundit, but as a neighbour, a father, and a community member who believes — deeply — that hope is a practice, and that solidarity does not stop at borders.
We’re sharing the audio of his radio interview here so you can hear, in his own words, what moved him to act — and why this moment matters.

If you’ve been considering joining us on Sunday, let this be your invitation.
Come listen. Come bear witness. Come stand with us.

We believe resistance is strongest when it is visible, disciplined, principled, and grounded in care for one another. Families, elders, first-timers, and seasoned organizers are all welcome.

🦃 HAPPY THANKSGIVING & Invitation Reminder! 🎭
🦃 JOYEUX ACTION DE GRÂCE & rappel d'invitation! 🎭
On this Thanksgiving Day, we want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for being part of our DAQC community. Even while many of us are far from “home,” we continue to build one together — a community rooted in connection, compassion, democracy, and solidarity.
Today is also the perfect moment to remind you to check your Inbox for a special message we sent: an invitation extended by one of our own DAQC members to join us next week for a powerful and timely cultural evening in Knowlton.
There are only 7 days left before our exclusive DAQC pre-show Meet & Greet & Q&A with playwright Terry L. Allison, ahead of the very first public reading of 45th Parallel at Théâtre Lac-Brome.
To learn more about the play and the inspiration behind it, we encourage you to visit Terry’s page here:
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582276413300
To RSVP, and to find the link to purchase your tickets from Théâtre Lac-Brome, please visit our DAQC event page:
https://www.democratsabroad.org/davehs/across_the_45th_parallel_an_evening_with_playwright_terry_l_allison
Seats are limited — and this little theatre fills quickly with locals on both sides of the border. We hope you can join us for what promises to be a meaningful, thoughtful, and heartfelt evening.
From all of us at DAQC, we wish you a safe, warm, & Happy Thanksgiving.
--------------------
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582276413300
https://www.democratsabroad.org/davehs/across_the_45th_parallel_an_evening_with_playwright_terry_l_allison
