There are 2 major events that shaped the library that stands here today: on March 12, 2015: The the library’s name got changed from The Mile End Library to the Mordecai-Richler Library.
1993: The Mile End Library opened.

Back when the library was a church, it hosted 700 students weekly at Sunday school.
It was then sold in 1988 due a lack of religious members as well as economic difficulties.

The Mordecai-Richler library has a rich and old history. Here’s how it was built:
Construction started in 1904 and ended in 1905. The architect behind the design of the Anglican church was Howard Colton Stone, who was born in 1860 and died in 1918
In 1909 the church help a fundraiser to raise money to extend the church. Next, between 1910-1911, the church underwent an extension.
In the 1990s the inside of the church was transformed into a library, the ceiling and the glass stained windows from the original church were preserved.
