Norway House Cree Nation Transforming our community into a true sovereign Nation. Norway House is one of the largest First Nation communities in Manitoba and has a rich history.

It is situated on the confluence of the Nelson River and Lake Winnipeg, 456 kilometers north of Winnipeg, Manitoba; approximately 800 kilometers by road. The population consists of 6,918 Band members and approximately 600 community members living in the adjacent off-reserve community. Norway House played a fundamental role in establishing the economic foundation of Manitoba & Canada during the fur trade era. It first emerged as a significant post in 1821 when the Hudson’s Bay Company and the Northwest Company merged and established a fur-trading post near the outlet of Lake Winnipeg in 1814. The Norway House post was named after Norwegian labourers who build the post in recognition for their exceptional building skills. Today, Norway House Cree Nation is recognized as a very progressive community and boasts a large number of amenities, including a hospital, personal care home, state-of-the-art educational facility, post-secondary facility, public work facilities and business establishments. The leadership believes in self-reliance and sustainability through economic development. Various economic ventures have been undertaken by Norway House Cree Nation, such as the Pharmacy, Dental clinic, bus transportation, Cellular & Communications System, York Boat Inn, Kistapinanihk Shopping Mall & Kinosao Sipi Multiplex Recreation Centre. Norway House Cree Nation has strong emphasis on education because it is the key component to a self-sustaining community in every aspect. It is very important to secure a better future for the youth and for generations yet unborn by initiating quality education and economic development strategies & projects which will capture the Vision of Norway House Cree Nation.

A THANK YOU TO THE JR. A NORTHERN BLIZZARD
RECOGNIZING THE TEAM’S VISIT AND COMMITMENT TO OUR COMMUNITY’S YOUTH

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Jr. A Northern Manitoba Blizzard Hockey Club for visiting Norway House Cree Nation and taking the time to engage with our youth.

During their visit, the players and staff hosted dryland training to help our young athletes build their skills off the ice, an open skate for community participation, and an open gym where everyone could have fun and connect with one another.

The energy, enthusiasm, and encouragement the team showed our youth made a lasting impression. For many of our young people, the opportunity to train, skate, and spend time with these athletes is an experience they will remember for years to come.

We are grateful to the Northern Blizzard for being positive role models both on and off the ice, and for demonstrating the values of hard work, teamwork, and community. We also thank everyone who helped make this visit possible, and we look forward to welcoming the team back again in the future.

NHCN CELEBRATES ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR CRITICAL WATER AND WASTEWATER INFRASTRUCTURE

Norway House Cree Nation is pleased to celebrate the confirmation of $851,666.00 in additional funding from Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), confirmed on October 1, 2026, to support critical repairs to our wastewater treatment plant and booster pump station.

Over the past year, NHCN has been working diligently to complete essential upgrades to our water and wastewater infrastructure to help ensure our community continues to have access to clean drinking water and reliable wastewater treatment services. With this additional funding, NHCN has secured a total of $2,581,746 over the past year to support necessary repairs and improvements to our Nation’s water and wastewater infrastructure.

Importantly, this funding is in addition to NHCN’s base funding for Public Works maintenance and operations. This additional investment supports critical infrastructure repairs beyond the Nation’s regular operational and maintenance funding, helping address immediate needs and protect essential services for our community.
NHCN extends its sincere appreciation to our Public Works Department for their continued hard work, dedication, and commitment to maintaining and improving our Nation’s essential water and wastewater infrastructure. We also recognize and thank Portfolio Holders Councillor Henry, and Councillor Laugher for their leadership, ongoing efforts, and advocacy in advancing this important work for the benefit of our members.

Looking ahead, NHCN continues to work with ISC to develop the Terms of Reference for a feasibility study for a new water treatment facility. Our existing facility is nearing the end of its service life and operating close to maximum capacity. Planning a new facility is an important priority to ensure we can meet the community’s current and future needs.

We thank Indigenous Services Canada for its support and recognize the collective efforts of our Public Works team, Portfolio Holders, and leadership in securing the investments needed to maintain, improve, and protect essential infrastructure. NHCN remains committed to advocating for continued investment to support the health, safety, and well-being of our members and future generations.
