Read Nyabuay Gatbel's The Fire Within
Having been born in the Pinyudo refugee camp, which is located on the border of South Sudan and Western Ethiopia, Nyabuoy Gatbel brings forth a fresh perspective to the everyday discourse surrounding the refugee experience. The Fire Within is Gatbel’s debut poetry book where she tackles issues of race, gender, war, genocide, sexual and physical violence head-on in a candid, unrestrained voice. She weaves together the story of the birth and the process of humanization head-on while trailing the story of her time at Pinyudo, the destruction of her community, the process of immigration, the fallacies held up by Western imperialism, and the conditioning of minds by Eurocentric ideals. Both emotionally honest and fearlessly driven, Gatbel’s The Fire Within sheds light on what it means to be a marginalized woman of color in an overtly white masculine world.
