Jason Madden discusses the Métis struggle for recognition within the Canadian Federation. He reflects on and cites stories of Métis people, such as Louis Riel, and, here in Ontario, he references the Mica Bay Incident. He discusses how the Indian Act initially promised peace and equality, but was later violated, imposing assimilation through policy.

Join us for the 2026 MNO Youth Leadership Conference.

This August, Métis youth from across Ontario will gather in Thunder Bay for our 10th Annual Youth Leadership Conference - a powerful opportunity to connect, learn, and lead.

When: Tuesday, August 11 to Wednesday August 12, 2026
Where: Valhalla Hotel & Conference Centre, 1 Valhalla Inn Rd, Thunder Bay
Who: Verified MNO citizens ages 16–29 (Youth under 18 will need a chaperone.)

This year's theme is Building Our Nation: Métis Youth and Self-Governance. Participants can expect:

- Interactive workshops on self-governance and Métis leadership
- Land-based learning experiences
- A unique opportunity to connect with Métis youth from across the province
- Storytelling sessions that celebrate our identity and community

Application approvals will consider regional representation, past event attendance, and attendance at the AGA to support balanced participation and engagement. Applicants will be contacted by the YLC Team regarding the status of their application by end of June.

Climate change is changing the lands and waters that sustain Métis communities.

That is why longstanding Métis values of conservation and preservation matter. In 1994, the Métis Nation of Ontario’s Founding Delegates Assembly made conservation a guiding principle for harvesting negotiations. Today, that same principle serves as a reminder to protect ecosystems and to respect sustainable harvesting.

Across the Métis Nation of Ontario, climate action and environmental stewardship remain priorities through initiatives that support conservation, sustainability, and community involvement.
